Ministry at San José de la Vega

San Jose de la Vega is a poor-to-middle-class neighborhood of Tegucigalpa just north of the airport. The Methodist Church presence here began in 2000. Currently meeting in a two-story rented house, the congregation draws members also from the nearby poorer neighborhood of "La Kuwait."

The Methodist Women's group is strong here. There is an active youth program, and Sunday school and worship generally draws more children than adults. The congregation has participated in neighborhood cleanup days and other community service ministries. Two members here are currently taking seminary classes at the Theological Community of Honduras, where Pastor Jorge Rodriguez is an adjunct instructor.

Current Ministries

     Accompaniment and assessment with women.
"Cantares" musical group; a ministry with youth.
Medical consultations - health teams in "La Kuwait"
Pastoral work with children: Bible classes, hygiene classes, school supplies
Lay pastoral training classes with leaders from the church.
Scholarships for youth with limited economic resources.

Needs and Plans

A large dream is to purchase a property near here on which to build a church sanctuary. The house currently being rented by the church for worship and ministry rents for $421 per month. The dream is to purchase a piece of property large enough on which to construct a church sanctuary and education/community service buildings, soccer field and basketball court, as well as an area on which to construct the national offices of the Methodist Church in Honduras. This is a large item for those who dream big, with a purchase price in the neighborhood of at least $150,000.

A fund to maintain a medical consultation ministry, quarter time.

Help with health issues for women, children, and infants.

Home improvement projects. Many people in the nearby community called "La Kuwait", settled there after Hurricane Mitch, and continue to live in what can be considered temporary housing with dirt floors.

Help for adults to finish their primary education.
