La Ceibita Mission Team Information

Area of Honduras: 5 miles southwest of the town of Tocoa (toh-COH-ah), in the department of Colón (koh-LOHN). The neighborhood is called Colonia Metodista , because many of the houses were built after Hurricane Mitch with UMCOR funds.

Travel time from San Pedro Sula airport: 5 - 6 hours by bus

Preferred airport in Honduras (destination city): San Pedro Sula

Electricity on worksite: Yes.

Accommodations: Teams stay at the Casa Ministerial

· Distance from worksite - you’re there!

· Setting - village residential

· Rooms - beds or foam mattresses provided

· Showers - there are 2 showers, unheated

· Toilets - there are 2 flush toilets

· Bedding and towels - Consult with the UMVIM coordinator.

· Phone— no fixed phone service. The pastor has a cell phone in case of emergency.

· Electricity— portable generator only, run for a few hours in the evening.

· Laundry— Pastor Randy can facilitate a local woman doing laundry for a fee. (Don’t pay more than the established fee, please)

Meals: Provided by Pastor Randy and local cooks.

Transportation: Bus from airport to La Ceibita and taxi from La Ceibita to Tocoa.

·           Malaria and Dengue Fever occur in this zone, both mosquito-borne illnesses. Take precautions
        against mosquitoes: Take full course of malaria prophylaxis, bring mosquito repellant, with some
        DEET in it (more than 35% DEET not needed), wear long-sleeves and long pants for protection
        against bites when needed, especially at dusk. Screens are now installed, so no mosquito
        netting is needed at night.

Cultural considerations:
The climate is hot and humid. This is one of the sites at which it is appropriate to wear long, modest shorts while working. They should be just above the knee, no higher. See also the general cultural awareness page on this website.
