Becas con Bendiciones: A New Scholarship Program for the Children of HondurasSince the inception of the original Becas program in 1999 by a missionary assigned to the Talanga Mission church, a significant number of contributions have been received by the Honduran mission. The result has been that every Mission church in Honduras has benefited from funds provided by work teams and others in support of educating less fortunate children. It has been an amazing program with literally hundreds of children being provided all or portions of their financial needs to attend school. As this program has grown in terms of contributed funds, we have the opportunity to provide even more scholarships and support for children in the neighborhoods of our local mission churches. We are continually amazed and blessed by the number of work teams that volunteer their time and resources to come to Honduras. Historically most of the contributed funds for scholarships have come from work groups while in the country or up on returning home. Many times groups designate their funds to support children in the area where they have been working. With the encouragement of Superintendent Roberta Pena, we are hopeful that individuals and groups will now consider pooling their contributions with others to support a new and exciting program that will benefit children in all of our Methodist Mission churches in Honduras. Arrangements have been made with wholesale suppliers for school supplies, uniforms and shoes which will reduce the overall cost of the program, allowing children to receive 100% of their needs to be met by your contributions. An important aspect of this program is that individuals and churches may designate their funds for a specific church. These funds will be restricted to providing scholarships for children of those churches. The final decision for scholarships will be made by the local pastor and their designated coordinator. One of the features of this program is that the donor will receive a picture of the child they are sponsoring and hopefully develop a relationship between the student and the person or organization that provides for their education. |
