Letter from our Senior Pastor

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Summer break is over and the schools are open and full of smiling faces eager to learn and develop into the leaders of tomorrow.

September 14 th through 21 st is Bring a Friend Week. This year we have expanded the emphasis to include two Sundays to enable more of our members to bring a friend to worship. So, please mark your calendars now for this special week in the life of FUMC and bring a friend to share with you and all of us. Please remember that 60 to 90% of new church members historically come because a relative or a friend has invited them. Therefore, look around at your family and friends and invite or rather bring those of your family or friends, who do not have a church home. There is plenty of room at the table for them.

Over the next six weeks, we will be hearing about an event here at FUMC. The event is called Consecration Sunday. On Sunday September 7 th Bill Hasemeyer, Director of Stewardship for the Nebraska Annual Conference, will be our speaker for both services of worship. So, please plan to be in worship on that day.

Also, please take a look at the info in the newsletter concerning the Loving Others to God, being host here at FUMC on Sunday September 21 st.

The words of Jesus in Matthew 28: 19 & 20 remind us of our purpose:

19  Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 20 Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I'll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age." (MB)

May God’s blessings and peace be upon you.

Anumpeshi Imma Chisas

“FIRED UP”

I am looking for a woman to volunteer to be a girls sponsor and small group leader during Wildfire on a weekly basis. This is a vital part of this ministry. If you feel God leading you to working with 6th – 8th grade girls, please let me know.

Attention Sr. High Students.... Sr. High UMYF, “The Faithful,” has started back in session. Our first project will be to paint a Noah’s Ark mural that was drawn by Cecelia Schrock on the second floor of the education building before see left for college. UMYF will run from 7:45 pm to 9:00 pm at the latest in the Youth Room on the third floor of the education building. Bring your favorite MUNCHIES to share with everyone. We will also be electing officers for the Teen Council this month for those persons who will sit on the youth council for the next year. Later in September we will be doing, a bible study on managing money by Dave Ramsey called “Generation Change.”

Sunday School will begin on September 7, 2008 at 9:45. The Confirmation Class has already begun for this year. We as a church body have an awesome responsibility to teach our children in the ways of our Lord. In Matthew 18, Jesus is asked by his disciple who is the greatest and here is Jesus’ response,   "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Let us all lead our children in the way, the truth, and the light. We have a new class for Sr. High students this year. If you have any questions about any of the Sunday School arrangements, feel free to give me a call at the office.

Jesus said, "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy
burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from
me; for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your
souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Fruit and Veggies - More Matters Month

Almost Everyone Needs to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables. Unfortunately, many Americans are not heeding the call to eat 5–9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. Compared with people who consume a diet with only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts as part of a healthful diet are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases, including stroke and perhaps other cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.

To get the amount that's recommended, most people need to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables they currently eat every day. Substituting fruits and vegetables for higher-calorie foods can be part of a weight loss strategy. Busy lives can benefit from foods that are nutritious, yet easy to eat on-the-go, like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of energy and give the body many nutrients you need to keep going. Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases.

To get a healthy variety, think color. Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors gives your body a wide range of valuable nutrients, like fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Some examples include green spinach, orange sweet potatoes, black beans, yellow corn, purple plums, red watermelon, and white onions. For more variety, try new fruits and vegetables regularly.

To get all the nutrients you need, without consuming too many calories, you should choose foods that are packed with nutrients, but lower in calories, from each of the food groups. These foods include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.

Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. Genesis1:29

Shalom,

Wanda Carson, Parish Nurse

The Worship Committee

Church Open House Month to be held

Across the state in September, the pews of United Methodist Churches will be filled with new, but not all that unfamiliar faces as congregations welcome church newcomers into their churches communities. Included in this month long event is “Invite a Friend to Church Sunday” on September 14.

Both Open House Month and “Invite a Friend to Church Sunday” are intended to encourage congregations to open their doors to new guests and welcome them to take part in a special day of worship and fellowship.

The Nebraska United Methodist Church has designated Sunday, September 14, as “Invite a Friend to Church Sunday,” but congregations may also designate another Sunday in September as their church’s own “Bring a Friend to Church Sunday.” In fact, every Sunday is an opportunity to invite a friend!

In addition to “Invite a Friend to Church Sunday,” special features of United Methodist Open House Month may include sermon series on welcoming, themed services and special dinners. Open House Month also serves as a perfect opportunity to welcome back current members from summer vacations and trips. It is the hope of the church that the welcoming outreach of an open house in September can carry forward with similar events throughout the year.

Food Pantry

Can you name our local mission opportunities??? The Community Pantry probably tops the list as the one that fills a basic human necessity. Do you all know that they moved last spring to the old Zephyr Café building so that they would have more room and would be in a very convenient spot?

The board has set the hours of 1:00-2:00 PM, Monday through Friday for people to come to the pantry for a food box. As Health and Human Services are no longer involved, persons can just come to the site for their supplies. If you know of anyone who could benefit from food and other household needs, be sure to refer them to the pantry during these hours.

Because the building will be open regularly, the board is looking for some more volunteers who would be willing to staff the pantry on a regular basis-once a week, once every two weeks, once a month— Their ads for a manager have not had any success, so they still need a manager. Maybe a couple friends could divide that responsibility. Call Rev. Jamie Anderson if you would like to volunteer for an hour here and there.

Because more people are using the pantry, and because the winter months are just ahead, the need for food donations is rising. I know that our church used to be quite diligent about bringing food on the first Sunday of every month, and the mission outreach committee is reemphasizing this mission effort. All boxed dinners, peanut butter, cereals, are always needed. In the past we have asked for the non-food items a couple times a year and have taken them to HHS, but now we can take them anytime to the pantry. So lets over flow the basket in the foyer every month.

The building was purchased with much prayer and faith and belief that this pantry answers a huge community need. The one thing that was lacking was money to completely pay for the building. So a fundraising committee is seeking money to retire that debt. If any of you would like to help in that effort, again contact Rev. Anderson.

We saw how needed this mission can be during the ice storm when the parlor of our church was full of food one day, and empty the next. This winter could be a hard time for many, so let this church do its part to support this vital mission.
