| BACKGROUND
Although the idea first surfaced in the 1970's, it was put aside to allow for the production of the history book on the Louisiana Conference. The idea was taken up again in the 1990's by Tim Hebert, who accumulated material on the Acadiana District while working on Methodism Along the Bayou ... a history of Methodism in the Houma-Terrebonne area. After putting together a basic historical register for the Acadiana District, the Louisiana Conference Commission on Archives and History was consulted. They agreed to help out with the project and dedicated funding to pay for the costs. At the 1996 Annual Conference, a photographic display of the Acadiana churches and the Acadiana District Historical Register booklet and was put up. Copies of the Acadiana booklet were distributed to the Commission, the Bishop, the Acadiana DS, and the Archives. The same was done for the New Orleans and Baton Rouge Districts at the 1997 Annual Conference. |
| CURRENT STATUS
The project is now on the Ruston and Shreveport Districts. The Ruston District Churches will be visited in spring/summer 2000. The Shreveport District Churches will be visited in the summer of 2000. Once all of the districts are completed, plans are being made for a single book which will contain all 550+ United Methodist Churches in the Louisiana Conference. A version will also be placed online. BUT, many churches from the Acadiana, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, New Orleans, North Shore, Alexandria, and Monroe Districts have not submitted a short church history. Please check your District page at the Louisiana Conference website for listings of churches that need to send one in. If your church is in the Shreveport, or Ruston Districts, or if it is another District but hasn't submitted a church history, please send in your church history ASAP. They can be send by postal mail to: Tim Hebert, Historical Register Project, 314 Richard Dr., Houma, LA 70364. It would be easier and quicker if you could submit it via email to: hebert@cheerful.com |
| FINAL PRODUCT
As it stands now, each page of the Register will contain: the church's name, a photograph of the church, some basic church statistics, a brief church history, directions on how to locate the church, and a map of how to get to the church. For an example of a page, go to the Abbeville page. |
