The Hispanic/Latino United Methodist Church in Frederick, Maryland meets together to worship Jesus Christ every Sunday at 2:15 p.m. at Trinity UMC in Frederick.  (Directions in English are located under the “direccion y mapa” page.) Most of the service is conducted in Spanish, although there are sometimes English translators available. Bible study in Spanish for adults and children is also an active part of this ministry.

Two years ago many UMC pastors in our area got together to pray and brainstorm about what we could do for our growing Latino population. (According to a recent article in the Frederick News Post, the county had a growth in the Hispanic population in 2006 – 2007 by 14.1 percent). 

 

Our response was a grassroots initiative that involved hiring our own Hispanic pastor to work with the Hispanic population and to hold worship services in Spanish. Milly Rivera began serving our Latino Initiative one year ago. They worship out of Trinity UMC in Frederick, who generously donates space and office support. The primary financial support from this initiative comes from other Methodist churches in our district. Our goal is nothing short of spreading Scriptural Holiness in the Frederick District.

 

Fruits:

We are training new Hispanic leaders in the church who are excited to be a part of this initiative.

Events for Hispanic youth which have brought in non-Hispanics to church.

Spanish AA program meeting in Trinity UMC, Frederick.

Sunday School and worship in Spanish every Sunday afternoon in Frederick

Miracles have been witnessed in relation to the power of prayer

Relationships have been forged between Hispanics and non Hispanics

English Classes have been provided.

Health care training has been provided in the community.

 

How can you help?

Invite Milly to your worship service to meet your congregations—build bridges, let Milly pray in Spanish and tell of her work, or let her preach.

Preach theologically about what it looks like to love your neighbor.

Have your congregation watch the sermon preached by Bishop Carcano at Annual Conference, which is available from our Hagerstown office. (She tells that the immigrants are coming here to survive.)

Have a joint worship service with Milly’s congregation.

Send some folks on our February Latino mission trip which will give opportunity to work in Guatemala in a very needy school. (More info to come soon.)

Have someone from your congregation be your church liaison for this ministry.

Invite someone from your congregation to teach ESL or be a part of the Auxiliary advisory board.

Keep this ministry lifted up in prayer.
