On July 1, 2007 the Hillsdale United Methodist Church welcomed the Reverend
Frank W. Kowar and his wife Nancy into the community of faith. Reverend Kowar
succeeds the Reverend Mark H. Earl who has been appointed to the Broad Street
United Methodist Church, Burlington, NJ. Reverend Kowar last served the Pearl
River United Methodist Church, in Pearl River, N.Y., for ten years. Reverend
Kowar and his wife Nancy were born and raised in New Jersey, having received
their education in New Jersey schools, both graduating from Ramapo Regional High
School and secondary education at Thomas A. Edison College; Drew Seminary and
William Paterson University, respectively.
During the Celebration of Appointment he was presented with gifts that depict
the aspects of ministry that he will bring to the congregation. The first
presentation was a Bible, as he proclaims the Word; followed by water, a symbol
of Christian baptism; Bread and Cup for communion; a Hymnal and Book of Worship
as a guide to prayer and praise; the Book of Discipline, a covenant connection
with all United Methodists; a globe, a symbol of mission to the community and
all the world; a stole, signifying his ordination and shepherding as pastor; an
altar cloth, symbolizing the church universal and the enduring circle of faith.
In a few brief remarks, Reverend Kowar spoke of his close friendship with
departing Pastor Earl as they split many a coke and conversation over the years
as pastors in the same Palisades District. Reverend Kowar spoke about standing
on the shoulders of the people who built the church in Hillsdale and that the
congregation had a chance to grow, change and build as it adds to the kingdom of
God and keeps building. He urged the congregation to continue to build so that
one day others may stand on its’ shoulders.
A celebratory coffee hour followed the Worship Service in Fellowship Hall.
