WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING (Written by a former child) A
message every adult should read, because children are watching
you and doing as you do, not as you say. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the
refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I
learned that it was good to be kind to animals. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me
and I learned that the little things can be the special things in
life. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew
there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in
God. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a
friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take
care of each other. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money
to help people who had nothing and I learned that those who have
something should give to those who don't. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our house and
everyone in it and I learned we have to take care of what we are
given. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your
responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good and I learned
that I would have to be responsible when I grow up. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes and I
learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be
everything that I could be. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's lessons that I
need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up. When you
thought I wasn't looking, I looked at
you and wanted to say, "Thanks for all the things I
saw when you thought I wasn't looking." THIS IS FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DO SO MUCH FOR OTHERS AND THINK NO ONE EVER
SEES. LITTLE EYES SEE A LOT.
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness… For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers
through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone... People, even more than
things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed;
never throw out anyone. —Audrey Hepburn
Philippians 4:13 --- I
can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. A Sunday school teacher was discussing
the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After
explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy
mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches
us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"
Without missing a beat one little boy answered, "Thou shalt
not kill."
CHRISTIAN ALPHABET Although things are not

waits in glory … where no one is ever sad! The one who kneels to the
Lord can stand up to anything. When Your Hut's on Fire The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up
on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to
rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none
seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a
little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements,
and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for
food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with
smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and
everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and
anger. He cried out, "God! How could you do this to
me?" Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a
ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! "How did you know I was here?" asked
the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke
signal," they replied. The Moral of This Story:
It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we
shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even
in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next
time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just
may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.
A pastor once stated, "I always noticed that its was the adults who
chose the children's hymn 'Jesus Loves Me' (for the children of
course) during a hymn sing, and it was the adults who sang the
loudest because I could see they knew it the best." Here is a new
version just for us who have white hair, or no hair at all. For
us over 40 - 50 - 60 (or even those almost there) and all you
others...check out this newest version of "Jesus Loves
Me". It is quite cute, so read, sing and enjoy: JESUS LOVES ME Jesus loves me, this I know, Though my hair is white as snow. Though my sight is growing dim, Still He bids me trust in Him. (CHORUS) YES, JESUS LOVES ME... YES, JESUS LOVES ME... YES, JESUS LOVES ME THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO. Though my steps are oh, so slow, With my hand in His I'll go. On through life, let come what may, He'll be there to lead the way. (CHORUS) Though I am no longer young, I have much which He's begun. Let me serve Christ with a smile, Go with others the extra mile. (CHORUS) When the nights are dark and long, In my heart He puts a song. Telling me in words so clear, "Have no fear, for I am near." (CHORUS) When my work on earth is done, And life's victories have been won. He will take me home above, Then I'll understand His love. (CHORUS) I love Jesus, does He know? Have I ever told Him so? Jesus loves to hear me say, That I love Him every day.
They lie on the table side by side, The Holy Bible and the TV guide. One is well worn and cherished with pride, Not the Bible...but the TV guide. One is used daily to help folks decide, No, not the Bible...but the TV guide. As the pages are turned, what shall they see, Oh, what does it matter, turn on the TV. Then confusion reigns, they can’t all agree, On what they should watch on the old TV. So they open the book in which they confide, No, not the Bible...but the TV guide. The word of God is seldom read, Maybe a verse as they fall into bed, Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be, Not from reading the Bible...from watching TV. So then back to the table side by side, Lie the Holy Bible and the TV guide. No time for prayer, no time for the Word, The plan of Salvation is seldom heard. But forgiveness of sin, so full and so free, Is found in the Bible...not on TV. Author

THE
LIVING BIBLE His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a
T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was
literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is
brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a Christian
while attending college. Across the street from
the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to
develop a ministry to the students but are not sure how to go about
it. One day Bill decides
to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair.
The service has started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for
a seat. The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By
now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says
anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and
when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the
carpet. By now the people are really uptight, and the
tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes
that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his
way toward Bill. Now the deacon is in his eighties, has
silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very
dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts
walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can't blame him for what he's going to
do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to
understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent
except for the clicking of the man's cane. All eyes are focused on him. You
can't even hear anyone breathing. The minister can't even preach the sermon
until the deacon does what he has to do. And now they see this
elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he
lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he
won't be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister
gains control, he says, "What I'm about to preach, you will never
remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever
read".
HIGHLANDERS 3rd THURSDAY AT 11:30 A.M. The shortest distance

The
cars in the Bible The apostles were all in one Accord, and Joshua's Triumph was heard
throughout the land. Must've needed a new muffler. Adam and Eve
were driven out of the Garden of Eden in a Fury — probably a
1957 coupe. Moses, warning the people not to go up to the
mountain, got Dodge Ram tough, sounding the "ram's
horn," thereby keeping the people away. On a sadder note, Herod brought in the head of John the Baptist in his Charger. The

the Good You Can, YOU ARE ... You are who you are for a reason, You’re part of an intricate plan. You’re a precious and perfect unique design, Called God’s special woman or man. You look like you look for a reason, Our God made no mistake. He knit you together within the womb, You’re just what He wanted to make. The parents you had were the ones He chose, And no matter how you may feel, They were custom-designed with God’s plan in mind, And they bear the Master’s seal. No, that trauma you faced was not easy. And God wept that it hurt you so; But it was allowed to shape your heart So that into His likeness you’d grow. You are who you are for a reason, You’ve been formed by the Master’s rod. You are who you are, beloved, Because there is a God! Russell Kelfer I would rather live my life as if there is a God, and die to find out there

there is.

Getting to know you Meet Laura Stuart Sometimes
it takes a while to discover just what path in life will lead to
choosing the right profession.
For Laura Stuart, her path is becoming clearer.
“I always knew I wanted to work with people,” she
says. “My biggest
thing is that I wanted to help people who couldn’t help
themselves.”
Laura remembers taking a health course while still in
high school, but not wanting to pursue the nursing field.
“It was my Aunt Sherry who talked to me about becoming
a physical therapist, and it was then I knew that was exactly
what I wanted to do.”
Still, it’s taken a while to get there.
After graduating from Dothan High, Laura began classes at
Wallace and was working towards getting into the physical
therapy program. She
then spent two years at the University of South Alabama in
Mobile. A random act
of violence very near her living quarters gave her second
thoughts about continuing her education in Mobile, and she
returned to Dothan.
She was recently awarded a scholarship from Flowers
Hospital, and is enrolled in the physical therapy assistant
program at Wallace. Through
this two-year program, she will complete all of her requirements
by May 2008.
While many can’t seem to fly from their hometowns fast
enough, Laura is happy and content with the slower, more
laid-back lifestyle Dothan has to offer.
“A lot of people tell me I need to get out and see the
world, but I feel like I have done that to an extent, and I’m
really happy here,” she counters.
Indeed she has spent her share of time away from Dothan.
Although she was born here, Laura was only a year old
when dad Ed joined the Army, moving the family to Texas, and
then to Germany. Laura
was three when the Germany move took place, and seven when they
returned to the states, and Louisiana.
They returned to Dothan in time for Laura to finish the
second grade at Selma Street before going on to Highlands,
Honeysuckle, and Dothan High.
Several years ago, while brother Curt was stationed in
Alaska, Laura traveled there to spend what was supposed to be a
two-week break. She
and Curt decided it would be fun if she hung around for a while,
and the trip turned into a three-month visit that Laura
describes as extremely memorable.
One of her favorite memories involves a moose and a
doorbell:
“In all the time I’d been there, I hadn’t seen a
moose, but the day before I left we actually saw moose tracks.
Curt was upstairs getting ready to go out with friends
when the doorbell rang. I
answered it, and a bull moose was standing there!
They chased him off, but the next morning, Sunday, he was
lying out front on the snow.”
Laura’s love of music is evident in her involvement at
Highland Park. She
is a member of both the choir and the praise band, and
occasionally sings solos for the congregation’s enjoyment.
With the addition of the new audio visual equipment in
the sanctuary, Laura is busy learning new software programs that
will enhance the worship services.
Laura is certified in scuba diving, although quick to
admit she’s not a fan of ocean diving.
“I just can’t get very comfortable in the ocean,”
she says. “One of
my favorite places to dive is Vortex Springs near Ponce de Leon
in Florida.”
She also enjoys bowling and cake decorating.
“I really like bowling, although I’m not any good at
it. I even took a
class to try and get better!”
She’s having better success with the cake decorating,
having produced the wedding cakes for grandmother Phyllis,
brother Curt, and for Ken and Karen Harris when they married
last year.
One of her prides, however, is creating the strawberry
tuxedo, in which she dips a strawberry in white chocolate, and
then accents it with regular chocolate to make it look like a
miniature tuxedo. “Not
only are they beautiful, but delicious
We bet they are!
