The people of the First United Methodist Church of Hawthorne are very active in the area of missions - locally, across the country, and worldwide. We help support two missionary families, the Terrys in Afghanistan and the Liaos in Taiwan, who have served the Lord in these two countries for many years. HURRICANE SUPPORT: HOW YOU CAN HELP First, please pray for the many thousands of men, women, and children who have lost virtually everything as a result of Hurricane Katrina, then:
Missions
coordinator Don Dannenhoffer is looking into ways that our
entire local cluster of
churches can sponsor some families displaced by the hurricane. If you have any resources or ideas about this undertaking, please contact him. Give: Your gift to UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes 2005 Global, will help those affected by Hurricane Katrina. You can give online at www.methodistrelief.org, at your church, over the phone at 1-800-554-8583, or by mailing a check directly to: UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068. Checks should be written to UMCOR with the Advance number and name written on the memo line of your check. If you would prefer that your funds to go to recovery in a specific region, please note that on your donation. Send: There is an urgent need for both health kits and flood buckets. These collections of everyday items help families recover during the early days after a major disaster. The health kits contain items such as a toothbrush, wash cloth, and soap. The flood buckets contain items like gloves, household cleaners, and bleach to help people clean their homes to make them livable again .For assembly and shipping instructions, call UMCOR Sager Brown at 1-800-814-8765 or click on the above links. You may also give a financial donation to to UMCOR's Material Resource Ministry, Advance #901440 to purchase cleaning supplies and hygiene that the Depot staff and volunteers will use to assemble health kits and flood buckets. Go: Volunteers will be needed to help in Hurricane Katrina recovery. To find out how you can help with hurricane cleanup, contact your United Methodist Volunteers in Mission jurisdictional and annual conference coordinators. A list of these coordinators is available on the web at http://gbgm-umc.org/vim/vimcoords.htm or write Mission Volunteers at voluntrs@gbgm-umc.org for contact information. They will provide details on creating and training a team as well as scheduling details. For information on what disaster sites are currently scheduling volunteers, call the Volunteer Hotline at 800-918-3100. Back FLOOD BUCKETS These supplies enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood or hurricane. For flood buckets only, if the requested sized item is not available, go down to the next available size. If nothing is available in the requested or smaller size, put masking tape on the outside of the bucket saying, "This bucket contains no _________."

Back HEALTH KITS Health kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes.
Value: $12 per kit. In a separate envelope, please send a check written to UMCOR Sager Brown for at least $1.00 for each kit to help with the costs of processing and shipping kits around the world. Back LAYETTE KIT Many women do not have swaddling clothes with which to welcome their child into the world. Layette kits provide basic supplies for their baby's needs.

Back SCHOOL KIT Most children displaced by the hurricane don't have books or school supplies. Many have no schoolrooms; classes are held in inadequate or half-destroyed buildings, tents, or even the open air. Often students must write down everything the teacher says or records on a board. Their teacher's knowledge and their own notes are their only textbooks. School kits may be these children's only educational resources. This UMCOR kit is designed for a variety of ages.

Back BULK MATERIALS The material resources program is always happy to receive kits and buckets fully assembled with all required items. However, the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot can use large quantities of bulk items that may be easier for some churches and church groups to acquire.
