Through efforts of the circuit rider Reverend Salmon Stebbins in 1837 the rural residents of the North Prairie of Illinois gathered together to form a congregation, Eventually this group separated to form three churches one of which was North Prairie United Methodist church.
The first church building was built in 1870 in the middle of a farm field complete with a shed for the horses
The first building was destroyed by lightning in 1923, but the horse shed survived
The second church was rebuilt and dedicated in 1924
The second building was destroyed by an Electrical Fire in 1999 while undergoing renovations. Most of the items in the Sanctuary survived and was used in the reconstruction of the new building
The current church was rebuilt and dedicated in 2002
