You’re invited…to tour Hanby House. This Civil War era historic house was home to Bishop William Hanby’s family. Bishop Hanby was a co-founder of Otterbein University, a United Brethren minister, a Temperance leader and an abolitionist. The house served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Bishop’s oldest son, Benjamin, composed “Darling Nelly Gray,” an anti-slavery song which was called “the ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ of song.” Benjamin also wrote the Christmas favorite, “Up on the Housetop.” The house is proudly owned by the Ohio Historical Society, operated and maintained by Westerville Historical Society and staffed with enthusiastic volunteer guides.
Tour Information The Hanby House is located at 160 West Main Street in Westerville, Ohio. Tour requests will be considered, dependent on available staffing. To schedule your school, contact Mary Lou McKeen at 614-794-0977. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn more about our local history and its connection to United States history at the time of the Great Rebellion. Hanby House is also open to the general public from May 5 to September 30, 2012 on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4PM. |
