A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HAHIRA UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH
In the year 1821, the
first colonist moved into this area in covered wagons. The first
worship services were held in the different homes of the town and in
other settlements of the county. Circuit preachers made occasional
visits to these gatherings. In 1858 the Methodist Congregation
worshiped in the Masonic Lodge and Courthouse and circuit rider
preachers preached to them. Gradually Methodism spread throughout the
county. The City of Hahira was chartered in 1891 and that same year
the Hahira United Methodist Church was formally organized. The
charter members of this fellowship were: Mr. F.L. Burton, Mr. and
Mrs. H Briggs Lawson, Miss Mantra Lawson, Mrs. W.F. Lawson, Mr. W.J.
Rountree, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Vickers, Mr. Joe T. Webb and Mr. and
Mrs. W.W. Webb.
The first church
was built on a lot between W.W. Barfield's home and George's
Department Store . The lot was given by Macon Construction Company.
The church burned soon after being built and was rebuilt on the same
site in 1892. It burned again in 1895 and was rebuilt at its present
location in 1896 on the corner of North Church and East Stanfil
Streets. That building though expanded and remodeled numerous times
during this century serves many community needs today. Forty
eight pastors have served the church in its 114 years.
Presently the church has
401
members and serves the community with the following ministries and
activities.

Our belief

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; the third day he rose from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

If you are looking for a church home where all are welcome and
Christian faith is vital for all ages, then you will be right at home
at the Hahira United Methodist Church. Each Sunday we gather to
celebrate God's love and inexhaustible resources - but our Christian
love for each other is lived out seven days a week.
In a world where it is hard to know what to trust, this church
lives out Christian fellowship at its best. God's love is evident in
committed lives, gestures of care and concern, for others and a heart
for children. Everyone matters in this church and everyone is welcome.
We extend a heartfelt welcome to all who would join us for worship,
for fellowship, for study and for service to others. So if you are looking for a place to worship and serve
the LORD or have questions about Christianity, please visit our church
or give us a call.
