The Pastor’s Ponderings
Friday, June 20 was the first day of Summer. Did you notice? The full solstice moon was red and close to the horizon Friday night. Friday afternoon, the sun was shining. The temperature got up into the mid-70’s. I looked around and saw so many trees in full leaf. The lilacs were in their final days and I thought to myself: Summer is here. Just in Time!
Having been raised on the prairies of Illinois (now the suburbs of Chicago) and after living in Iowa for so many years, I still expect Spring and Summer to come early…before the date on the calendar. And yet, here I am, now living in a place where summer actually starts on the first day of summer…just in time for the last day of Vacation Bible School. Just in time for the Gwinn Centennial Activities. Just in time for all of us who are tired of cold, wet, gray days. Praise God for Summer!
Summer is our time for resting and playing and being outside. Yes, I’m told over and over again, summer is so short in this northern climate, so truly, we need to relax and take it easy and enjoy the beauty of God’s world in all the ways that we can. I can really relate to what a young man named Michael Joseph wrote: Notice the playfulness of nature: gurgling streams, dancing light, humming birds, fluttering leave, twinkling stars. All creation wants to play with you.
The Ten commandments remind us to honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy. God gave us the gift of rest and relaxation from the very dawn of creation. And summer gives us a whole season in which to sit back and recharge our batteries.
I was reading an article the other day that was talking about the re-set button on computers and on routers and on other appliances. The author, Don Richter, makes the statement: Play is the reset button God gives us to get a fresh take on a situation and to renew our lives.
So it is now July and August, and what better time to take a break and go outside to play. Yes there are projects that need our attention. Sure, the Gwinn Centennial activities are going to keep some of us busy… but don’t forget to play. To everything, there is a season and now is the time to give thanks to our Just in Time God who gives us summer. Thanks be to God, now and always.
God’s peace and playfulness to you all!

Be the earth that you walk on
Be the sky that you seek
Be the moon that you dream of
And you will be the stars that shine so bright
Just be
Just be
Just be yourself
