Almost 40,000 children
under five die each day from malnutrition and infections. That
is a number that we cannot comprehend. That is a number more
than 5 times the number of people who died September 11th and
it is happening every day. So many children in our world have
little to eat and dropping food aid is only a short-term
answer. We need to do something to help.
What can one person do? How can we help
the children of the world including those here in the US?
Heifer Project has been helping people since the 1930's when
Dan West, a Midwestern farmer ladled out cups of milk to
hungry children curing a civil war in Spain. It struck him
that what these families need was "not a cup, but a
cow." He asked his friends back home to donate heifers, a
young cow that has not borne a calf, so hungry families could
feed themselves. In return, they could help another family
become self-reliant by passing on to them one of their gift animal's
female calves.
The idea of giving families a source of
food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued
for more that 50 years. As a result, families in 115 countries
have enjoyed better health, more income and the joy of helping
others.
On Saturday, December 6th, 2008 our church
will be sponsoring a Living Gift Market. Here you can buy
animals or shares of animals as gifts for family, friends,
relatives, co-workers, and teachers -- anyone on your
Christmas gift list. All of the money that is raised goes
directly to Heifer International. You will receive an
ornament as well as a card stating the gift that you have
purchased. For more information about Heifer International go to their web site
at www.heifer.org where
you can read stories about families and children who have been
helped in the past. Imagine who you could help in the future!
Heifer International Living Gift
Market will be held on Saturday, December
6th, 2008 from 8:00 a.m.
to 2:00 p.m. Besides shares of animals, there will be
breakfast and lunch served as well as a baked goods table.
Consider signing up to help the day of the fair -- We have a
great time and need lots of volunteers!
Remember help to children of the world
comes one person at a time!
Here's how it works...
