Heifer International
Living Gift Market

December 6, 2008
8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
"Giving to Heifer means giving someone a permanent victory over hunger,
poverty and environmental degradation."

The Living Gift Market is a great way for our congregation to shop for friends and family while helping to end world hunger. The Living Gift Market sells gifts of food-and-income-producing animals and provides training in their care.
Chicks, rabbits, pigs and other animals are provided to hungry families working to improve their lives. The animals are gifts that "keep on giving" by reproducing for years to come. Each family receiving an Heifer animal passes on the gift by giving an off-spring of their animal to another family in need.
At the Market, you can buy alternative gifts of animals that are given to impoverished families around the world. These animals provide food and income for years to come. Families receiving the animals also receive the necessary technical training for their care.
Friends and family who are honored by those who have bought gifts receive an attractive card explaining the gift given in their name. The gift buyers may have a card hand inscribed by calligraphers. A small ornament is also often included.
The one  who receives the best gift is likely to be a small child who will wake up to milk every day, when before there was none. What better way is there to celebrate the birth of the One who came to "bring good news to the poor"?

"Therefore I command you, you shall open wide your hand.
...to the needy and to the poor."

Almost 40,000 children under five die each day from malnutrition and infections. That is a number that we cannot comprehend. That is a number more than 5 times the number of people who died September 11th and it is happening every day. So many children in our world have little to eat and dropping food aid is only a short-term answer. We need to do something to help.

What can one person do? How can we help the children of the world including those here in the US? Heifer Project has been helping people since the 1930's when Dan West, a Midwestern farmer ladled out cups of milk to hungry children curing a civil war in Spain. It struck him that what these families need was "not a cup, but a cow." He asked his friends back home to donate heifers, a young cow that has not borne a calf, so hungry families could feed themselves. In return, they could help another family become self-reliant by passing on to them one of their gift animal's female calves.

The idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for more that 50 years. As a result, families in 115 countries have enjoyed better health, more income and the joy of helping others.

On Saturday, December 6th, 2008 our church will be sponsoring a Living Gift Market. Here you can buy animals or shares of animals as gifts for family, friends, relatives, co-workers, and teachers -- anyone on your Christmas gift list. All of the money that is raised goes directly to Heifer International. You will receive an ornament as well as a card stating the gift that you have purchased. For more information about Heifer International go to their web site at www.heifer.org where you can read stories about families and children who have been helped in the past. Imagine who you could help in the future!

Heifer International Living Gift Market will be held on Saturday, December 6th, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Besides shares of animals, there will be breakfast and lunch served as well as a baked goods table. Consider signing up to help the day of the fair -- We have a great time and need lots of volunteers!

Remember help to children of the world comes one person at a time!

Here's how it works...

There is a table for each animal (or tree) sold by HPI,

including cows, water buffalos, llamas, sheep, goats,

pigs, bees, chicks, ducks and even trees.

rabbit

These tables are manned by volunteers - both young and old

Individuals can come in and purchase part of an animal, a whole critter

ornaments shaped like animals

or even a flock,
                         herd
                                    or grove
                                                   for varying prices.

You don't actually get the animal you purchase ...

...instead you get a Christmas tree ornament shaped like your animal,

a packet of information about how your gift will be used

and a gift card (with free calligraphy services) if you would like to give you gift in honor of someone else for the Christmas season

here's one of our shopping tables

The fun doesn't end there!

There's a kitchen full of workers preparing delicious food, great food!

our children have lots of fun

      ...a children's craft table

petting zoo

...and a petting zoo!
