PROJECT
LIGHT
English
as a Second Language (ESL)
Classes are going well. There are
about 24 students enrolled in the program at two centers.
The tutors use PROJECT
LIGHT, a Christian based computer program, which allows
students to work at their own rate in their twice weekly
classes.
By the time they complete the program in
about 1-1/2 to 2 years, they should be able to read and
write English at the fifth grade level.
The ESL program can expand only as
tutors are identified.
The primary things needed to
be a tutor are the ability to speak English, a little
more than 3 hours weekly to devote to the program and a
mission minded spirit.
It is helpful if a person has minor computer
skills and knows a little Spanish but neither is necessary.
Tutors are provided special training and
ongoing support by tutor-mentors.
Helen Stanley is the leader of the classes
at the Hispanic Center in Mayfield and Carolyn Hinman oversees
the Pleasant Grove UMC program.
Classes can be set up anywhere there is a
need and tutors are available.
