Hispanic United Methodist Ministry 2nd Anniversary

Born of a vision of the Graves County Cluster of United Methodist Churches, planning began in early 2005 to establish a Hispanic UM Ministry in Mayfield.  A large and increasing   Hispanic population lives in the area, mostly employed by industry and agriculture.  The ultimate goal is for a ministry by and for Hispanics.

Located in the former Fuller-Gilliam Hospital, the main floor is occupied with offices, lobby, computer lab, thrift store, nursery, sanctuary, activity center, kitchen, clinic, restrooms and supply storage. A furnished apartment for the Missioner is on the second floor and five other apartments are occupied by rental tenants. The Parish Nurses organization opens the screening clinic on Tuesday nights.   ESL (English as Second Language) classes are held at two sites, using Project Light software.  Spanish classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evening. There is storage space in the basement for materials and seasonal items for the thrift store, Closet Bargains.  The Graves Co. Cluster serves a free meal at the Center every Sunday afternoon.

Countless hours have been given by individuals and groups in cleaning, painting, carpentry/plumbing/electrical work to renovate the rooms. Furnishings have come from a wide variety of sources.  Much more is needed and is shown by the following lists.

The ministry is an apportioned project of the Paducah District UM Churches, and was initially funded by grants and funds from Memphis Conference and the Paducah District.  Those wishing to make contribution to the Hispanic Ministry may send checks to the Paducah District UM Office, or to Boyce Yates, Ministry Treasurer, 715 Barger St., Mayfield 42066.
