Methodist Messenger:  October, 2009

Grangeville/Nezperce/White Bird UMC

THANK YOUS:  Thank you to all of you who have helped with our coffee hour during the month of June.  Coffee Hour Sign-up is available on the round table by the front door for those of you who are called to serve in that capacity. And a thank you to all that brought goodies to our monthly potluck on the last Sunday. Also, there are sign-up sheets for Readers, Greeters, lawn mowing, and flower watering.  Please do sign up (even after you have completed the need!)

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT:  On Thursday, September 24, Andrew and Jill Lane became the proud parents of a baby girl, Ava Jillian, 9 lbs. 8 ½ oz, 21 inches.  She is the first grandchild of Pete and Shirley Lane. Mother and baby are doing well.

YOU ARE INVITED TO OUR “GRANDMA BABY SHOWER”:  On Sunday, October 18, at 1:30, in the Fireside Room at the church, please join us for a fun time celebrating with Shirley Lane her first grandchild.  There will be punch, cake, games, and great fellowship. If you have questions, call Rose Mangini, 983-0489.

Our Annual Salmon Dinner is in the Planning Stages:   The 21st annual Salmon Feed will take place on Friday, November 6th from 5 to 7 pm.  We will be serving grilled salmon as well as scalloped potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, rolls, home-baked pie with coffee, tea or milk.

We would like to keep the price at $12 for adults; $5 for youth ages 6-12; and free for children 5 and under.  This will provide a good, healthy, meal that is affordable for all.

Our church has been hosting this event for 20 years.  It is used as a fund raiser, but of equal importance is the opportunity to invite the townspeople for an evening of fellowship and good food.  This year is a transition year, as the Poncins mentor Craig, Jane and Lee Spencer in the role of facilitators.  The church is very thankful of the Poncins for their years of service in this event.

The dinner has been possible due to the support of volunteers, who have generously donated their time through the years. It takes around 30 people to put this dinner on, so expect a phone call.  We are looking forward to working on another successful church dinner.

If you have questions or suggestions, contact Lee Spencer at 507-0992.

PPRC Report for the Newsletter

A special meeting was held on September 16th to prepare our recommendations for Pastor Cindy Roberts 2010 salary and benefits package.  This recommendation will be presented to the Ad Councils at their next regular meeting.

Those in attendance were: Pastor Cindy, Mike Griffin (Finance committee Chair), and Jim Kitchens (representing White Bird Church, Shirley Smith, Mildred Asker, Jane Spencer and Dave Poncin.

The recommended Pastor’s salary will remain the same as 2009, the housing exclusion remained the same as last year.  This exclusion covers utilities costs and allows our Pastor to deduct them from her Federal Taxes.  Currently the Churches pay a portion of the allowance but do not meet their full obligation.

Because of our financial situation for the past year Pastor Cindy has not requested payment for professional reimbursements.  This item includes her mileage when traveling, books and educational supplies etc.

The next PPRC meeting will be held at the Church at 7pm on October 1st.

TRUSTEES:  Quality heating serviced the boilers and mini split heat pumps at the church and the furnace at the parsonage earlier in September.  With the purchase of heating oil last month, we are ready for the heating season.

Ted Lindsley talked to Ron and Linda Johns about the need to do some landscaping in front of the granite wall covering that was completed with summer.  Ted, Wendy and Drew volunteered to do the landscaping as a gift to the church.  They will do the design, purchase the plants, prepare the soil, and do the planting.  This will complete a project that we have wanted to do for many years.

We are still considering designs for the sign and reader board for the front of the church.

MISSIONS - JAMAA LETU ORPHANAGE: This will be our last Sunday (September 27th) to collect for the Orphanages.  We have received to date $1,125. To support 3 girls, we need a total of $1,479.00. (Additional $354 is needed.) If we are short some, we will support the 2 girls and the extra will go to the boys’ construction orphanage fund. Thank you for giving from your hearts.

EVANGELISM COMMITTEE: We’d like to thank those who have donated to the UMCOM community outreach ministry.  We continue to meet the needs of those in the community through your efforts.  If you are planning a yard sale, remember we can use those unsold household items.  You are encouraged to sign up to be a greeter.  This is an important effort to welcome visitors to our church.

UMW (United Methodist Women):  At our September meeting, we set some dates and goals for our next few months.  We will be making our annual Mincemeat on Monday, November 23, 9 am. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 11, 10 am, at the church.  This meeting will include an Installation service for the new officers for next year that we elected in September.  Also, after the meeting will be a no host lunch at Oscar’s. On Saturday, October 10, the UMW Conference Annual Meeting will be in Mt. Vernon, WA, which Rose will be attending.

Watch your weekly bulletin for a date when Kay Stumpf will be back to Grangeville and we will plan a coffee hour celebration for her.

The Sharing Circle will begin on Wednesday, October 7, 10 am, at Shirley Smith’s.  We will again have this the first and third Wednesday each month.  Drop-ins are encouraged!  We will be studying the Book of Psalms, so each meeting will be a separate study. The purpose of the gathering is to educate and provide fellowship with other Christian Sisters. All are welcome even if you do not come to the other UMW meetings.

MONTHLY POTLUCKS:  We continue to enjoy our monthly potlucks on the last Sunday of each month in Grangeville.  We are asking you to bring an item for the Idaho County Food Bank on that Sunday.  A suggestion is to purchase double ingredients for your favorite dish.  Make the dish for the potluck, and place the duplicate items in the food bank basket.

NEWS FROM WHITE BIRD CHURCH:  Ad Council meets the 2nd Sunday of October which is Oct.11th at 2:00 pm.

On October 25 we will be receiving new members and baptizing those who are interested.  There will be a potluck after church that day at 4:00.  We invite any guests who would like to attend.

How to stay safe in the world today
1. Avoid riding in automobiles - they are involved in 20% of all fatal accidents.
2. Do not stay home - 17% of all accidents occur in the home.
3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks - 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.
4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water - 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.
5. Of the remainder, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals, so try to avoid hospitals.
6. But, you may be pleased to learn that only 0.001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders.
Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given time is at church! So, for safety's sake, attend church! It could save your life!

October Newsletter- Looking Forward from Pastor Cindy

What does it mean to be a “Fruitful Congregation”?    A fruitful congregation is a community of faith that lives out God’s grace. Congregations that live out God’s grace will have within them “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control,” (Galatians 5:22) the fruit of the Spirit. The list of attributes describes the whole fruit of the tree in the same way a quality of elements describes what makes up conglomerate rock filled with very diverse elements in different amounts. But fruit is alive with an expectation of fruitfulness based on the quality of the tree. Not one perfect fruit, but each fruit has within it each elements of  “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control,” Even if the fruit is shared, cut apart and divided, each piece no matter how large or how small, will have each of the distinctive attributes of the fruit of that tree  in each piece. The qualities and attributes of the Spirit of God are similarly infused into the Body of Christ. We are all in this together, but we are also together the same as children of God. As we grow in God’s grace, the quality of our fruit increases, our congregations become better able to fulfill our missions to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by showing renewal, health and vitality. We are alive in God.  By practicing being a fruitful congregation, all three churches can be “fruitful in the Spirit.”

Five Practices of “Fruitful in the Spirit” Congregations

Radical Hospitality- Congregations offer gracious invitation, welcome, and hospitality of Christ so that people experience a sense of belonging.

Passionate Worship-God shapes souls and changes minds through worship, creating a desire to grow closer to Christ.

Intentional Faith Development- God’s Spirit nurtures people and matures faith through learning in community.

Risk Taking Mission and Service-With increased spiritual maturity, people discern God’s call to help others through mission and service.

Extravagant Generosity- God inspires people to give generously of themselves so that others can receive the grace they have known.

We have been looking at the practices of “A Fruitful Congregation” during our worship times together. We have heard about “Radical Hospitality” and “Passionate Worship.”  On Sunday Sept. 27th we will hear about the practice of “Intentional Faith Development” and then the two following Sundays the practice of “Risk taking mission and service” and “Extravagant generosity.”  On Sunday October 25th, all three churches will have an opportunity to bring persons into the Community of faith through the Sacrament of Baptism, and welcome persons who would like to join or transfer their church membership to one of our three United Methodist Churches. If you are interested please contact Pastor Cindy.
