From the Mission FieldTelethon will raise money for church mission workUnited Methodists hosted a fundraising telethon for missions Oct. 12 in Nashville, Tenn. The live event at Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry, was taped and will be broadcast from 6 to 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 6 on the Inspiration Network (lNSP) (channel 53 on Time Warner Cable in Columbia). Featured entertainers include Willie Nelson, Shirley Jones and Judy Collins. Sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, the telethon focuses on stories of mission and church development in 11 countries since 1989. Those countries are Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Senegal, Cameroon, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal, Mongolia and Honduras. The rapid growth of these ministries has created a critical need for funding, according to the Rev. S T Kimbrough, a board executive. The telethon's goal is to raise $2.5 million to address such needs as training for pastors and lay people, programs for women and children, and the building of churches. Viewing information for the Dec. 6 broadcast is available at www.insp.com. For more information, contact the church office (803) 732-1899. gracechu@bellsouth.net. |
