Goodman, Missouri, USA

First & Russell (417) 845-3405

The Goodman, Missouri Methodist church was organized in 1912 and our first pastor was Rev. Dan Pool. The first services were held in the building that once stood on the current location of the Baptist Church. The Charter Members included Mr. & Mrs. Robert Keith, Miss Grace Bailey, Miss Eliza Bailey, Mr. & Mrs. Ira Richardson, Mrs. Maude Pogue and Mrs. Farrell.

The oldest part of our current building was constructed in 1916. This is the white stucco portion that is on the left side of the picture above. It was built with a full basement and a floor above. In 1964, under the leadership of Rev. Dan Sullivan, an addition was built onto the North of the original structure and the original building was converted to Sunday School rooms. While Rev. Fred Weber was serving us, in 1982, we added a fellowship hall onto the north of the 'new' sanctuary. This addition was completed by the members of the church (with help from some of the men from the Anderson Church), some driving nails and some providing meals (and kids playing in the yard). The cabinets in the kitchen were built by John Woodrum. This addition was fully paid for by the time it was completed and we have enjoyed many dinners and other social occasions since then.

In 1962 the decision was made to merge the Goodman Church and the Anderson Church into a two church charge. After the merger, the Goodman Church sold their parsonage and the pastors from that time have lived in Anderson. They have commuted from Anderson to hold early services at Goodman and later services in Anderson. The first pastor to serve the joint charge was Rev. Dan Sullivan (1962-1964)

Our records show that the Ladies Aid Society was formed in 1926. The group was composed of thirty three members and the first meeting was held on October 13, 1926. Their meetings were in the homes of the members. Mrs. Robert Keith was the first President and the dues were sixty cents ($0.60) per year. In 1938 the name was change to the Women's Society of Christian Services and then later to the United Methodist Women.
