Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church

1821

Methodist circuit riders, itinerant preachers, arrived in Greencastle.

1826

Log cabin house of worship built for Methodist worship. Located on lot bounded by present day Locust, Washington, Spring, and Franklin Streets.
1836-1847 Small brick building on corner of present day Indiana and Poplar Streets used for Methodist Worship.
1847-1879 Roberts Chapel built on corner of Poplar Street and College Avenue for Methodist worship.
1850-1871 Simpson Chapel built on corner of Seminary Street and College Avenue by Methodists which had split from Roberts Chapel. They rejoined Roberts Chapel in 1871.
1876-1924 Locust Street Methodist Episcopal Church built from abandoned Simpson Chapel and other materials. Many former Simpson Chapel Methodists worshiped here.
1879-1924 College Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church built to handle Roberts Chapel's overflowing crowds.
1924-1929 Greencastle Methodist Episcopal Church created from College Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church congregation and Locus Street Methodist Episcopal Church congregation. Methodist meeting were held alternately in each church.
1929-1933 DePauw University purchased the Locust Street and College Avenue church buildings and a new building was constructed at the corner of Locust and Simpson Streets for the Greencastle Methodist Episcopal Church to meet.
1933-1939 The church was renamed Gobin Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of Hillary A. Gobin.
1939-1969 The church was renamed Gobin Memorial Methodist Church.
1969-Present The church was renamed Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church when the Methodist Church joined with the Evangelical United Brethen Church.
