At the Glen Alpine United Methodist Women's December 2002 meeting Amy Toney was given a life membership pin from the ladies in recognition of her leadership that she has had in the United Methodist Women's Circles. These groups meet one a month at members homes for Bible study, mission study and they work in projects for the church to help make a difference. There are 2 day circles and 2 night circles. Call the church office to obtain more information.
What is United Methodist Women? Organizationally, United Methodist Women is the successor to the home and foreign missionary societies and guilds of the seven predecessor denominations that now comprise The United Methodist Church. United Methodist Women is the group of women in each congregation organized for mission. Because The United Methodist Church is a connectional church, local units of United Methodist Women relate directly to district and conference organizations of United Methodist Women and to the Women's Program Division of the General Board of Global Ministries.
What is the purpose of the organization? The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
How does one become a member of UMW? One becomes a member by expressing a desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the church through UMW.
The first women's organization at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church was in 1935 - The Women's Missionary Society. The Women's Society of Christian Service was charged through the Conference in 1939, and the organization's name was again changed in 1972 to United Methodist Women.
The women of Glen Alpine have always been active in many projects. Primary emphasis is placed on missions -- local, national and world. Mission money is sent to the Women's Division through the District and Conference United Methodist Women. Contributions are also made directly to various mission projects. We financial and prayerfully support our church Adult and Youth Mission teams who make annual trips for a national mission project.
We encourage members to pledge their gifts for mission work, but at the same time we promote projects to help raise funds. Such projects through the years have been bake sales; bazaars and rummage sales; selling vanilla, knives, and various other items; and fund-raising luncheons and dinners.
Many talented women have served as officers and faithful members of the United Methodist Women. We have grown through the years to 60+ members with three circles. The circles meet monthly in a member's home for Bible or mission study, prayer and fellowship, and spiritual growth. The circles include the Deborah, Miller, and Mallory Circles.
