Homepage Gethsemane Church History

Gethsemane United Methodist Church has its roots in the former Whitely Methodist Church that was founded in 1895.

Many families from the Whitely Church and the Rev. Sheldon Duecker, who later became Bishop Duecker, planted the Gethsemane United Methodist Church as a new church reaching out to the growing north side of Muncie in 1954.

In 1961 a second building was constructed under the leadership of Rev. Sheldon Duecker.

In 1971, Asbury Hall was the third building constructed. This was for church offices and fellowship activities.

Currently (2006) the church has a membership of 481 people.
271 average worship per Sunday (2 services).
148 average attendance for Sunday School.
