THE GERMFASK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH:
Is part of a 3 church charge which includes Grand Marais
and McMillan United Methodist Churches. The church is 32
miles from the parsonage and on a Sunday morning, the entire
circuit is 91 miles.
Germfask?s claim to fame is that the name of the town was
formed by putting together the first letters of the first
8 settler?s names. The community is settled on the Manistique
River and is home to two wonderful campgrounds which offer
canoeing and kayaking. The community sits equi-distant from
the main roads of M28 in the north and US2 in the south.
The community has a community center in what used to be
the school, a small grocery, a restaurant, a VFW, several
churches, and a couple of tavern/restaurant that has a great
fish fry every Friday night.. School children must bus to
either Burt Township (Grand Marais) or Manistique ? either
being a very long ride. The community also has a Germfask
Area Service Club which promotes the small community, helps
people in need and holds children?s functions such as an
Easter party and Christmas party.
Between Germfask and Seney is the Seney Wildlife Refuge.
This seven mile drive offers a wonderful opportunity to
see birds and wildlife. At the edge of Germfask is an eagle?s
nest on what is no longer a telephone pole. New poles were
being put up and the company did not want to ruin the nest,
so they moved the pole with the nest on it. The eagle comes
back year after year.
The VFW hosts a Sunday Brunch on the second Sunday of each
month. Several of our men are absent from our Sunday service
as they are flipping pancakes and making toast. During the
brunch, the Service Club holds a bake sale.
The church has a very ?open door? policy. They happily
host ?Volunteer in Mission? groups during the summer. They
also make the building and the members available for a community
Vacation Bible School and a community ?Happy Birthday Jesus?
party.
