dortoakpark.gif (4825 bytes) Dort-Oak Park Neighborhood House
The service area that is primarily targeted by the Neighborhood House Corporation is made up of residents of the Fifth Ward in the City of Flint, but is not exclusive. This ward is considered a breeding ground for an at-risk population. Factors contributing to this high-risk reputation include high levels of school drop-outs, teen preganancy, violent behaviors, unemployment and under-employment of residents. The Fifth Ward consists of census tracts 12, 13, 14, 15, and 25. Theses tracts were identified as having the highest crime rates in the City of Flint, as reported by the Flint City Police Statistical Department in their 1995 report. The Neighborhood House Corporation is located in the heart of the Fifth Ward. The youth that participate in our programs are considered as this "at-risk" population. Out of the 83 children registered in our after-school program, 98% are from single parent households and are considered low income based on the Federal Income Guidelines. Our mission and purpose came from the work of two very special ladies, Ms. Alberta Jones and Mrs. Sarah Ballou.
