Rally Day – A Time to Celebrate

The summer is over and school has started. And as the church, we celebrate the coming of fall with Rally Day.

The service on September 13 will be a service with special music, a special sermon, and a fellowship party after worship.

Please be sure to come!

 Door-opener

When the book of Acts (see 16:25-26) reports that Paul and Silas sang in the Philippian jail at midnight, it doesn’t record whether they were basses or tenors. It doesn’t even report if they sang on key. It simply says they sang. And as they sang, there was an earthquake and the prison doors were opened.

Many of life’s doors open more easily when we sing. So why not open some doors by joining the choir?

Choir Practice will resume September 16th at 7:30 p.m.

Children’s Choir – We are planning on starting a children’s choir! If your child (any age) is willing to share their voices or play hand bells, plan to stay 30 minutes after church on September 6th. We will be singing “Jesus Loves Me” and “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love” (both from Bible School ), on September 6th. We also hope to sing September 13th for Rally Day

Wednesday Soup and Study

Starts again on the 16th and follows every Wednesday! We meet at noon, enjoy lunch and Bible Study. We will start the fall with Beth Moore’s Patriarch’s Study. See Pastor Katie for details.

Fall Bible Study for All Ages

Starting October 1st, we will be offering Thursday Night Bible Study for all ages. Come to church at 6:30 for dinner and then stay for Bible Study. Everything will be done by 8:30! There is Bible Study for kids, youth, and adults. There is even a special parenting class. Please invite your friends and neighbors!

The Price Is Right for PotLuck

On Saturday evening September 19th we will have our annual Pot Luck Supper.  The supper will begin at 5:00.

Right after enjoying a wonderful dinner, you will be invited to “Come On Down” for the “The Price Is Right”.  We will guess the price of items and receive gifts when we are right.

Study up on your shopping and come enjoy the good food and fellowship.

Youth Camping Retreat – HUGE SUCCESS

--Submitted by Andrew Brown

On July 24-26 the youth hosted a wonderful weekend of fellowship, growth, and learning at the Youth Camping Retreat.  We had 15 young people attend, and 11 adults joined us on the two night retreat.

On Friday night, after we got the tents and campers set up we had a devotional on investing yourself in God and the church, and gaining dividends from God.  We then had mountain pies and smors around the campfire.

Saturday we started the morning off with a prayer session followed by a big breakfast and our morning devotional, focusing on what we can do to reach out to those around us, and showing God’s love.  The youth left the camp to visit the flight 93 memorial; it was a very moving experience for everyone and gave us a chance to reflect on what happened that horrific day in September.  We then went to the Memorial Chapel, where we met the pastor who transformed the forgotten church into a reminder of God’s love for America, and a place to pray and reflect.  We learned about the history of the chapel, looked at pictures, objects, and memorials, and then prayed together.  We went back to camp for dinner, where we served 32 people that included surprise visitors from our church.  Our evening devotional was about opening our wells up and letting the living water flow, not letting ourselves to be clogged up with sin.  Afterwards we had a prayer session followed by more campfire treats!

On Sunday morning we woke to a rain storm that moved past in time for us to have breakfast and Morning Prayer session.  We had our final devotional and worship time where we learned how to be successful with our outreach.  The sun came out and the youth went on a 4 mile hike that included a half mile train tunnel under a mountain, and breath taking views of the Eastern Continental divide.  Everyone that went on the trip said they had a wonderful time, and I hope that they took some of what they experienced with them when they left.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who donated food, supplies, and money to help make the camping trip a success   We look forward to going again next year!

Mark Your Calendars – Charge Conference is scheduled for October 25th at 4:00 pm at Grace UMC in Hagerstown . This is the time we celebrate the growth of Garfield in the last year, approve new leadership for 2010 and pastoral compensation. Please plan to attend. Worship with other churches will start at 3, if you are able to attend.

Thank you to the Vacation Bible School volunteers who worked so hard the week of June 15th and then came back for the VBS reunion.  Your talents and efforts were noticed.

 From Pastor Katie

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25

Standing in Picture People, we struggled to get Eden to smile. With her turning two, all I wanted was a nice photo to send out with her birthday party invitations. No matter how much I smiled, or tickled, or bribed, nothing worked. Eden simply wasn’t smiling, and neither was I.

“Why don’t you try to get her to sing a song,” the photographer suggested.

“Do you want to sing?” I asked my precious child as she threw a far from precious fit. She stopped kicking her feet for a moment. “Christians?” she asked. “Christian’s Mommy?”

The photographer looked at me in wonder. I began to sing the song that she learned at Bible School , “We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord.” As we sang, Eden began to dance and smile. As we got to the chorus (“And they will know we are Christians, by our love, by our love”) all of her temper tantrum was gone. She was into it! And for the rest of the photo shoot, we sang “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love.”

“Not the typical song for a toddler,” the photographer commented in passing as he walked to check her photos.

I guess it isn’t. But what a blessing that Eden has been taught about what it means to love Jesus through the ministry of Garfield. She never would have learned that song if she had not come to Bible School. Garfield has been a place of learning and of love. It has been a place where she has grown to know Jesus, where she has begun her journey with God.

In Galatians chapter 5, we hear the fruit of the Spirit. We know them: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These are the marks of the followers of Christ. These are the outward signs of the grace of God that is moving in our hearts. And as we follow Christ more and more, as we begin to become the people God has created us and called us to become, we exhibit these fruit more and more.

And fellowship, study, and worship at Garfield is a wonderful place to help foster these fruit. From weekly Bible Study for people of all ages, to life applicable, Spirit moving worship on Sunday morning, Garfield is a place where we can all grow in Christ.

I know it because I see it in myself, and I see it in my daughter.

As we celebrate her second birthday, I give thanks for the blessings you have been in our lives, in her life. Please join us after worship on Rally Day, September 13th, as we celebrate Eden ’s second birthday. As her family in Christ, her brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and grandparents, it would be our honor to have you there!

May God bless you and your family as we grow to follow Christ more and more everyday

Bible Studies & Rock-A-Thon

---Submitted by Andrew Brown

I can’t believe that it is September already, and fall is right around the corner.  Class is back in session, school sports are in full swing, and the youth group is gearing up for an exciting fall, after a relaxing summer.

September marks the beginning of the Jr. Kings Kids!  Our first meeting will be on Sunday September 20.  It is open to everyone in grades 5-8.  We will meet in the Social hall at 5, a light meal will be served at 6 and we will wrap up at 6:30.  Dave Upshaw and I will be leading the group.  We will have devotionals, games, and small field trips.

The Kings Kids are having our annual Rock-A-Thon fundraiser on September 11-12.  This year we are raising money for Military Ministry, to help send Rapid Deployment Kits (RDKs) to soldiers serving abroad.  The event starts Friday night at 8pm and ends Saturday morning at 8am.  It is open to all ages, grades 5 and up, food and drinks will be provided!

The youth are currently meeting the first and third Sundays of the month for the Bible Study entitled “Balance” this Study is open to all youth and Young Adults.  After the Study is over we will go back to our monthly meetings which are held on the third Sunday of the month.  We also are planning on building a Mummers Day Parade float for the parade on October 31 this year’s theme is “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

The church has shown us great support over the summer, and we hope that you can continue to help support the youth group into the fall so we can continue to grow, not only in size, but in faith as well.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer with any of our upcoming events feel free to contact me anytime: A.Brown.87@live.com, or (301)606-5458.  You can find The Youth Group on Facebook.com, search for GUMC Youth and check out our Videos at Youtube.com/TheGUMCYouth.

Yellow Card Questionnaire –

Than you for taking the time to fill them out!

Salt is necessary for the human body and has also been used as a preservative for meat and other foods. In the Bible, salt represents permanence, loyalty, fidelity, use-fulness, value and purification.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells his followers they are the salt of the earth. But, he adds, “If salt has lost its taste .... it is no longer good for anything.” What was Jesus’ message? Choose the correct answer below.

A. Jesus’ friends should remember him when they put salt on their food.

B. Jesus’ friends are important, but if they fail to serve him and tell others about him, they will have neglected the roles he has for them.

C. Bad salt is good for nothing.

D. Christians should have a positive influence on the world.

Jesus Loves Me (for Senior Citizens)

Jesus loves me, this I know, though my hair is white as snow. Though  my sight is growing dim, still He bids me trust in  Him.

 (CHORUS)
YES, JESUS LOVES ME.. YES, JESUS  LOVES ME..
YES, JESUS LOVES ME FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME  SO.

Though my steps are oh, so slow, with  my hand in His I'll go. On through life, let come what  may, He'll be there to lead the  way.
(CHORUS)

When the  nights are dark and long, in my heart He puts a  song. Telling me in words so clear,   'Have no fear, for I am near.'

 (CHORUS)

When  my work on earth is done, and life's victories have been  won. He will take me home above, then  I'll  understand His  love
 (CHORUS)

I  love Jesus, does He know?   Have I ever told Him  so? Jesus loves to hear me say, that I love Him every  day.

The Birthday and Anniversary Calendar has been misplaced. (Have you seen it around church? The last place it was spotted was on Pastor Katie's desk). SO... please mark your birthday and anniversary again. This time we will scan it into the computer

Things to Make Note of

Nominations Committee meetings are scheduled for September 10 and 24th, both meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m.   Remember to pray about how you can serve the Lord at Garfield and let a member of the committee know.

Crochet/Needlepoint/Craft Fellowship – this will be a time of working on items for the bazaar, working on items that you are making and a time of good conversation.  Remember the quilting bees?  Well we are taking it a step farther, bring whatever you are working on to the church on Saturday, September 12th at 2:00.

This Day Is a Gift

This beautiful day is a gift of love

That’s given to us from God above.

With twenty-four hours of time to use

In ways God is hoping we’ll wisely choose.

So why not ask God for both guidance and grace?

Let God set the standards as well as the pace.

Then when the day’s over, we’ll find we’ve been blessed

With all that we needed in choosing what’s best!
