How do we know that the Bible is true? Other than the
fact that the Bible says so.
There have been many books written on the subject of the
reliability of the Bible. A careful study of the facts would
undoubtedly support the over 3,000 claims of divine inspiration
contained in the Scriptures. The Bible is undeniably accurate in
its prophecies. It is scientifically sound, historical accurate,
and remarkable in structure. Furthermore, there is also
overwhelming evidence that the texts we have are reliable.
The Bible contains some 1,817 individual predictions on 737
separate subjects found in 8,352 verses. There are prophecies
dealing with individual nations, the course of history, the
spread of Christianity, and many other subjects. Hundreds of
Bible prophecies have been fulfilled, often long after the
prophetic writer had passed away. Jesus Himself fulfilled more
than 300 prophecies. No one can refute the Bible's accurate
prediction of future events with facts. The odds of all these
predictions being fulfilled is beyond human explanation outside
of divine revelation.
Further evidence of divine inspiration is found in the fact that
many of the principles of modern science were recorded as facts
of nature in the Bible long before scientist confirmed them
experimentally. A few examples include; the roundness of the
earth (Isaiah 55:9), the law of conservation of mass and energy
(II Peter 3:7), the hydrologic cycle (Ecclesiastes 1:7), the law
of increasing entropy (Psalm 102:25-27), the gravitational field
(Job 26:7), and many others. While these are not stated in
technical jargon, they are in complete accord with modern
scientific facts. Man has taken centuries to discover many things
the Bible stated thousands of years ago. Where did the writers of
the Bible get their information - if not from God?
The more we learn of history, the more the Bible is validated. In
the last century alone there have been numerous archeological
confirmations of Biblical records. One of the greatest modern
authorities on Israel archeology, Dr. Nelson Glueck, has said:
"No archeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical
reference. Scores of archeological findings have been made which
confirm in clear outline or in exact detail historical statements
in the Bible. And by the same token, proper evaluation of
Biblical descriptions has often led to amazing discoveries."
The more that archaeologists find from the past, the more the
Bible is proven accurate historically.
One can not overlook the remarkable structure of the Bible.
Although it is a collection of 66 books, written by about 40
different writers over a period of some 1,500 years, it presents
one message. The Bible writers came from many walks of life,
including kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, herdsmen,
poets, statesmen, scholars, soldiers, priests, prophets, a tax
collectors, a tentmaking rabbi, and a Gentile doctor. Each, at
the time of writing, had no idea that their message would
eventually be incorporated into such a Book, but each fits
perfectly into place and serves its own unique purpose as a part
of the whole. Books written by men contain no unity of though
even on one subject. But there is perfect unity between the books
of the Bible, which speaks of hundreds of subjects in many
fields. The only explanation can be one divine Author controlling
these human writers.
Final evidence that the Bible is true can be found in the
testimony of those who have believed it to be the Word of God.
Millions of people have acted on the Bible's commands and have
testified to receiving its promises. The Bible works for people.
This alone should serve as evidence that the same One who created
us is the Author of the Bible. Only the manufacturer knows what
to write in the product handbook to make his product function
properly.
Examine the facts, gather statements from eyewitnesses, look at
the track record, crosscheck statements, provide historical
verification, authenticate the documentation, and you can stand
on 2 Peter 1:20-21
" Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of
Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For
prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke
from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
