Willie Spivie and Men’s Bible Class

Chapel—Room 18 on the Facilities Map

On Sunday, April 20, 2008 class member Pat Hopper spoke about the class at the morning worship service.  Below is a transcript of her remarks:

"Notice who is sitting at the organ today.  (Turns and looks at the organ where visitor and former organist Gail Thomas is seated).  We are so glad to have you, Gail.

The Willie Spivey class the and Men's Bible class meet in the parlor on Sunday mornings.  These were organized probably in the early 1900’s.  Mrs. Posey asked me this morning if I remember the Harmony Sunday school class, and I do.  I didn’t until she mentioned it, but that was one of the older classes that were here and as she said it just died away.  But these were probably three of the earliest Sunday school classes that were organized in the Methodist Church here in this church.

I found a list of the women in the Willie Spivey class that was made in 1993.  There were 62 names on that list.  And if you noticed in the Messenger this week we had 27 names on the list.  We are getting smaller.  And then the Men’s Bible class was quite large, too back in the 1900’s too.  But there are only 5 listed now.

But we have combined the classes.  Now the men meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9ish and Vernon Barnes makes coffee for them every Sunday.  And then they come over and join us for the lesson in the International Lessons series.

We have five teachers.  The first Sunday is Vernon Barnes.  The second Sunday is Linda Burchfield.  The third Sunday is Sue Robbins.  The fourth Sunday is Pat Hopper.  The fifth Sunday and substitutes when we need her is Janet Toon.

We still probably—raise your hand if you sing a hymn before your Sunday school lesson every Sunday—we do.  We sing a hymn.  We sing at a hymn on Sunday mornings.  But thank goodness we have Nancy Horton that is so faithful to play the piano for us.  Some Sundays we are so few I say “Let’s not sing.  Let’s just listen to Nancy play.”  And Mary Jo Jones leads us in our singing.

Dixie Holt is our President, and Dorothy Clark is our Secretary/Treasurer.

And we try to support all the missions that the church supports.  But especially we support the Food Bank.

And we would really appreciate new members in our class, especially someone who would be willing to teach.  Everyone is invited.  If you are not going to a Sunday school class come and visit us.

But be prepared to be captured."
