After FUMC volunteers trucked supplies to Louisiana in September 2005 to aid in the care of displaced persons (see Photo Album), a team of FUMC volunteers helped again, in the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast of southern Mississippi, in March and November 2006.

The first involved a team of 20, with 17 from our church, who worked in the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast region of southern Mississippi from March 11 to 18.  Our volunteers stayed at Vancleave Methodist Church, which graciously fed and housed our group for the week.  Team members worked to rebuild several of the 100,000 homes that were completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.  Many of the homes were uninsured.

The second trip was an annual event in June.  A group of volunteers travel to Colonet, Mexico, to build a new home for an impoverished family.  This year we worked in partnership with Lafayette Methodist Church, which offered to raise the funding for construction costs ($3,000 worth of building materials).  Because our volunteers pay for their own food, our church's financial responsibility for Colonet is eased.  However, we still need donations for transportation and insurance costs, as well as additional funding to support the Methodist church in Colonet, provide a running water system for the home being built, and purchase household items (e.g., stove, kitchen utensils, broom, dustpan, etc.)

Because the needs that we saw were so great, we returned to Mississippi in November, and also returned to Colonet!
