First UMC of Redwood City

2004 Update

"First UMC of Redwood City is a downtown church whose membership is sixty-five percent Tongan and thirty-five percent other. We have English-speaking and Tongan-speaking services. Every first Sunday we have a joint worship service. The Tongan youth group is an active part of the English-speaking worship service every third Sunday of the month in either song, dance or both. In our desire to learn more about one another’s culture (more than just music, food and dress), we are exploring ways to increase our time together in and beyond worship.

"God has blessed us with a new Director of Music. She began July 1. Under her direction, with the cooperation of the congregation and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we look forward to growing a new music ministry to enhance our worship experience and community involvement.

"Sunday morning Bible Study continues to be a time of reflection and community building as we seek to understand God’s word and its meaning for our lives. We are studying the Gospel of Luke until the end of the Christian year. Pray for us as we begin some type of weeknight study in the near future to which the community is invited.

"Our Sequoia Children’s Center provides a quality educational and nurturing foundation for infants, toddlers and pre-Ks.

"In November, we will celebrate our 140th anniversary. God has brought us this far by faith. We trust that God is still with us and believe that with God all things are possible. God is doing a new thing at FUMC. Pray that we have new eyes to see and the courage and boldness to move in new ways as the Spirit leads.

"We deeply want to grow our church both spirituality and numerically. We pray for God’s help, wisdom and favor."
