Our History Greetings From God's People At First United Methodist Church!
In the late summer of 1857, the pioneering families of our town under the leadership of Major W.H. Pitts organized Methodist Episcopal Church South. It first met in a log cabin on the site of the present Education Building. But that log cabin wouldn't hold the Methodists! It was soon torn down and replaced by a two story structure. In 1888 a new frame church was built just south of that building.
The turn of the century brought a new excitement and a bold commitment. In 1904, the congregation engaged Dallas architect James E. Flanders to build a new masonry building. Construction began in the fall of 1904 and was completed in early spring 1905. The style of the building showed the influence of the "new" prairie style of the young Frank Lloyd Wright. The new building was adorned with priceless stained glass windows and oak pews. The pipe organ was installed in 1906, and while modernized, its visual appearance is the same as when installed. The total cost of the new church was $25,000.
The people of First United Methodist Church are a family of a great heritage and a great future. Our mission is to worship God, to love our neighbors, to go and make Disciples, to love one another, and to teach each other how to live before God. It is our joy to share our church family with you!
