Pastor Wilson's Message

Greetings Friends and Members of First United Methodist Church,

One thing that makes it bearable to drop hands with the wonderful family of the faithful at South Avenue United Methodist Church is to know that at the same time we have the privilege of grasping the hands of the wonderful family of the faithful at First United Methodist Church.

It is with deeply felt joy that Glenna and I welcome this very special privilege and opportunity to become part of this church family. First Church has a long history of steady faithfulness to Christ as it seeks to love God and neighbor in the midst of our ever-changing world. That faithfulness continued to emerge under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Keller. I pray that it will continue to emerge as we love and laugh and grow together.

We look forward to living in the flow of the Holy Spirit with you as we celebrate being rooted and grounded in Christ, respectfully giving and receiving from each other our diverse perspectives, and permitting the Holy Spirit in the midst of our community to transform our perspectives as we grow and witness together.

In the people whom we have had the privilege of meeting thus far, we have felt the warm hospitality of this community of faith and sensed its passion to be in vital and faithful ministry for the sake of Christ. So although there is a grief, real and painful, that we are all feeling because of change, may we also affirm together:

Christ is alive, and goes before us
to show and share what love can do.
This is a day of new beginnings,
our God is making all things new.

Peace,
Rev. Bob Wilson

Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m., and our Sunday worship service is at 11 a.m. The worship service in our incredibly beautiful sanctuary is alive with great music, biblically relevant preaching, and the awesome presence of God. September through May, we have a contemporary worship service (including contemporary Christian music, drama, video clips, and prayer) on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Hawley Chapel. We look forward to greeting and hosting you.

After both the Sunday and Wednesday worship services, we host a coffee fellowship time, and after our worship service on the fourth Sunday of every month, we enjoy an all-church fellowship dinner. We hope you will be our guest!

FUMC is dedicated to community outreach, with an emphasis on spiritual nurture and healing. Our Saturday meal ministry; singles ministry; clothes closet for those in need; Shepherd Wellness Community meals, for persons with AIDS and their families; Cub and Boy Scouts; AA meetings (five); Toy Lending Library; and Disciple Bible study give expression to our neighborhood commitment.

FUMC is located at the juncture of Liberty Avenue, Baum Boulevard, Centre Avenue, and South Aiken Avenue, nestled between the Shadyside, East Liberty, Bloomfield, and Friendship communities. We look forward to hosting you with God's love!
