Gather to Learn, Go Out to Serve

Our Mission

"You shall love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and your neighbor as yourself."  Mark 12:29-31
The mission of the Paris First United Methodist Church is to call persons into a living relationship with Jesus Christ and respond to meet the spiritual, emotional, social, and physical needs of each individual in this congregation, community, country, and world.

A Brief History

In November 1831, Bishop Joshua Soule declared a rough-hewn log mission chapel to be the Methodist station church in Paris, Tennessee.  The town of Paris was scarcely eight years old.  This moment was one step along the journey of the "People called Methodist" toward Jesus' calling to be light for the world.  This journey would include various locations and buildings, growth and renovations to the place we now call home.

The present church building was built in 1926, dedicated in 1944, and renovated in 1956 and 1994.  Throughout its history, evangelism and missions have been a vital part of the First United Methodist Church.  It has sponsored and supported the establishment of West Paris Mission, Paris Station Missionary Society, Ladies Aid Society, McFerrin Club, and the Juvenile Missionary Society.

First Church's ongoing ministries include our television ministry, Vacation Bible School, Youth mission trips, United Methodist Women,  world hunger, Reelfoot Rural Ministry, support for Dr. Paul Liao at Taiwan Seminary, Hinton Rural Life Center, Helping Hand, Lifeline Bloodmobile, Meals on Wheels volunteers, Habitat for Humanity, Pre-school story hour, Henry County Food Bank, Boy Scouts, Harrison Meadows programs, IMPACT After School Enrichment, and a dynamic athletic outreach program.
