Gather to Learn, Go Out to Serve

IMPACT, sponsored by First United Methodist Church, is an innovative approach to after school programs for 5th & 6th graders.  Beginning in the Fall of 2001, IMPACT will offer enrichment activities after school until 6 pm.   City and County school systems will provide bus service to First United Methodist Church.
Students will be involved in a variety of activities designed to stimulate their spiritual and emotional development and encourage academic achievement.

Wellesley College's National Institute on Out-of-School Time has identified four desired outcomes for after school programs and the children who participate in them:

  • Relationships with caring, competent, and consistent adults;
  • Access to enriching learning activities;
  • Access to safe and healthy environments; and
  • Partnerships with families, schools, and communities.

IMPACT's goal is to provide children with fun and fellowship in a safe and healthy environment with strong Christian adult leadership.

Why do we need a program like IMPACT?

What others are saying about the significance of the after school hours for middle school children:

"This period of time between the school bell and the factory whistle is a most vulnerable time for children.  These are the hours when children are more likely to engage in at-risk behavior and are more vulnerable to the dangers that still exist in too many neighborhoods and communities."

--Former Vice President Al Gore

School-age children and teens who are unsupervised during the hours after school are more likely to use alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, engage in criminal and other high-risk behaviors, receive poor grades, and drop out of school than those children who have the opportunity to benefit from constructive activities supervised by responsible adults.

This sounds great, but how much will all of this cost?

IMPACT's program is designed to be effective and affordable.  The fee is $25 per week for one child and $15 per week for each additional child in the family.
