PRELUDE

“He is Lord”

with “When Morning Gilds the Skies”

Arr. Cindy Berry

The prelude is a time of centering – of transition from “getting here” to “being here”.  Please take the time to quiet your spirit.  Be aware of being with others.  Feel the spirit of God in the community.

KING’S KIDS

“Hallelujah”

Arr. Joseph Linn

WELCOME    If you are a visitor with us today, we warmly say welcome.  We invite you to join us at the rear of the sanctuary after worship for fellowship and refreshment.  Please take a moment and fill out the “Ritual of Friendship” pads at this time.  Please list all family members attending today, your address and phone numbers, and then pass the books back through the pews after everyone has signed, so you may greet and know those sitting with you.

MISSION, MINISTRY AND STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS AND VISITORS

Please stand to make your introductions.  An usher will bring the portable microphone to you, beginning with the east section, working left to right.  Please introduce your family and friends, using the microphone.

*THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Greet those around you with signs of peace and love.

*CALL TO WORSHIP

There is a grace that lives beyond reason, unlimited by human expectations. It flows like a river of love from the heart of God and bears our fears away in refreshing flows of living water. There is always a kindness which moves in the depths of being, healing and restoring, comforting and inviting us on.

We will never know its reaches, nor know in full the wonder of its realities.

*OPENING SONG

“Open Our Eyes”

# 2086   FWS

*INVOCATION

Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ, rise among us with your enriching life in this hour. Tell us new truths in the deeps of our souls, that we may more faithfully share with others our gratitude for knowing you, even a little. And now hear us as we pray the words of Jesus:

*LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Do not be afraid. God's standards are not ours. Forgiveness streams through the universe in a never-ending flow of grace. We are forgiven this day.

      Thanks be to God.

*ACT OF PRAISE

Ushers collect the “Ritual Friendship Pads” at this time

“Where Children Belong”

This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng.  Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer, and song:  This is where children belong.

RESPONSIVE READING

Psalm 65

Praise to you, O God, who answers our prayers.

To you the people will come when deeds of wrong overwhelm us.

You will forgive us and bring us joy.

We will be filled with the goodness of your holy place.

You deliver us with awesome deeds, O God of our salvation.

You are hope to the ends of the earth and the farthest of seas.

You silence the roaring seas and the noise of the people.

You make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy.

You visit the earth and water and enrich it.

You provide the people with seeds,

softening the earth with showers and blessing its growth.

The meadows clothe themselves with flocks,

and the valleys deck themselves with grain.

They shout and sing together with sheer delight.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray:

     Silent Prayer

     Pastoral Prayer

With hands held high we celebrate your love, O God, so wide and deep, so complete and all-encompassing. How can we ever express how thankful we are? How will we ever tell you what you mean to us, especially when our spirits are low and our lives filled with regret?

How can we share the indescribable joy that lies within us as we live in hope and walk within your grace? Thanks be to you, O God. Amen.

*HYMN

“Sweet Hour of Prayer”

# 496 UMH

*GOSPEL READING

Luke 18:9-14

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:  {10} Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. {11} The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. {12} I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' {13} But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God,

 (Continued on back page)

be merciful to me, a sinner!' {14} I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted." (NRSV)

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God!
