*CALL TO WORSHIP
God
values all who live, choosing the company of those who are pushed to the edges
of life. Our riches are nothing to Jesus Christ - weighed and found wanting and
cast aside in the favor of the pearl of great price, that is love.
We
would be your people, O God. Call us to walk beside you and to see the people
who lie at our gates.

O
God, as you are found among us this day, gather into our company those whom we
have not recognized.
Grant us access to

wonder of your life. Amen.

This,
this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer, and
song: This is where children belong
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Based on Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16
We who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, wlll
say to our God: "My refuge and my fortress, in you will we trust."
Show us your salvation, O God.
God will deliver us from the snare of the
fowler and from deadly pestilence. Under God's wings we will find refuge and
God's faithfulness will be our shield.
Show us your salvation, O God.
We will not fear the terror of the night, or
the arrow that flies by day. We will be safe against the pestilence that stalks
in darkness and the destruction that wastes us at noonday.
Show us your salvation, O God
Those who love God will be delivered and
when they call, God will answer. God will be with us in trouble and with long
life will satisfy us.
Show us your salvation, O God.
PRAYERS OF
THE PEOPLE
The
Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let
us pray:
Silent Prayer
Pastoral Prayer
O God, as we explore our
lives in relation to others, we pray that we will know what is of value and
what is not. Give us insight that adds a greater wisdom to the way we look at
the world. Build up in us an inner core of strength that is not dependent on
this world's wealth but on the true gold of justice and compassion.
As
we journey through each year, may we grow braver in taking the risks that
inspire true community in our hearts. Give us the
confidence to take the steps that create reliance on each other and kind
support for all people.
Empty the barns in which we
gather the huge profits for a few privileged people as we take up the cause for
new ways of living together. We pray now for countries that strive in emptiness
to gather the wealth of the world to themselves and those who beg for enough to
survive.
Take
our hands now and place them in love and care beneath the lives of those who
struggle. So direct us in just actions that, when we meet struggling ones, they
will recognize us as their friends. This we pray in the name of Jesus who
taught us to pray saying:
Our Father, who art
in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as
we forgive those who sin against us. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
*HYMN “My
Life Flows On” #2212 FWS
*GOSPEL READING
Luke
16: 19-31
"There
was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted
sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered
with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man's
table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was
carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was
buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham
far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy
on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my
tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.' But Abraham said, 'Child, remember
that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like
manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides
all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who
might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from
there to us.' He said, 'Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father's
house--for I have five brothers--that he may warn them, so that they will not
also come into this place of torment.' Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and
the prophets; they should listen to them.' He said, 'No, father Abraham; but if
someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, 'If they
do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if
someone rises from the dead.'"
This is the word of the
Lord.
Thanks be to God!

A warm FUMC
Welcome to Rev. Mark Haverland at his first service today.
Have you ever been hungry and cold with no way to get food to eat or blankets
to keep you warm? Many people all over the world and even here in
You can help these people. I can help. Everyone can help.
Sunday, October 14th is CROP WALK day. CROP WALK gives us two ways to
help poor people eat and keep warm. We can be walkers, we can pledge money
for the walkers, or we can do both.
Your Missions Committee is going to sponsor a contest, a competition
between our church's adults and our youths, age 1-18. The competition
will be for the most number of walkers and for the most amount of money
obtained in pledges.
If you want to be either a walker or a donator, please see me (Lee Berryhill),
or Jennifer Peterson, or Audra McKinney for a walker's form or to make a pledge
of money.
On October 14th we will find out whether the adults or the youths of our church
can produce the most walkers and get pledges for the most money.
I'll see you on Sunday, October 14th at
