Youth Group Report for March
2008
The
Youth Group has been really busy since January. Monies
were collected in soup pots along with cans of soup on Souper
Bowl Sunday. The results? The peoples generosity brought in $325 and
over 75 cans of soup to feed the hungry in our area. Thank you for caring and for stirring
it up!
Lots
and lots of pancakes were consumed on the 4th Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake
Supper on Feb. 5. Jesse and Dawn Ross cooked
up the pancakes, the youth served, and the people ate.
The results? Over
$800 was raised for the Youth Group Mission and Outreach projects. A total of 25 bednets
were purchased to combat Malaria in the Nothing-But-Nets program in Africa. The remaining funds will go towards youth ministry
programs and future mission trips. Special thanks goes to Jesse and Dawn Ross for coordinating the
Pancake Supper, to IHOP for furnishing pancake batter and sausages, and to the people for
eating the pancakes.
We began our 2008 Confirmation
Experience The Great Adventure in January and we included the whole youth
group in the Experience. 9 youth and 3 adults
took off in the new church bus to attend an overnight Confirmation Retreat on February 29
March 1 at the Warren W. Willis Camp in Fruitland Park. There were over 400 persons total from all over Florida. Two youth (Caroline Heywood and Chelsea Heywood)
were baptized and four youth (Daniel Funderburke, Caroline
Heywood, Chelsea Heywood, and Jeremy Ross) were confirmed on Easter Sunday, March 23, at
the First Wave Service. One youth (Devin
Harris) will be confirmed on a Sunday during the Spring at the
First Wave Service. A slideshow was created to
show some of the experiences. Confirmation
2008 really was a Great Adventure. Congratulations
to our newest members of the First Church Family.
The Youth Group hosted the
Clues Club one Sunday evening and gave them a taste of summer camp with game, activities,
food, and worship. Excitement was contagious
as five of the Clues Club are registered for camp this summer. Sarah Mitchell has been accepted to serve on the
Leadership Team at camp and Abbie Gordon is on the waiting
list to serve. Sarah will be joining her
sister Allison on the Leadership Team.
Lent is always a special time
for the Youth Group. This year a new way to
experience Holy Week was added Holy Cell-ebration. Each day during Holy Week, there was a daily cell-ebration that began at 3:15 p.m.
Text messages were sent out to all the cell phones of the youth for a time of
worship. For example, The Lord be with
you was sent out to the youth and they sent back And also with you. The messages included passing the peace, prayer
requests, Bible readings, and the UMYF Benediction. The
Youth Group also hosted the annual Good Friday Service for our church with the theme of
Peace of Christ and the use of prayer stations.
31 persons experienced the peace through the prayer stations.
The youth will participate in
the CROP WALK along the beach on March 30 and hope to feed the hungry in a local soup
kitchen in the near future. Six members of our
youth group will graduate from Cocoa Beach Junior / Senior High School this year on May 30
and we will be honoring them during the month of May.
One of our youth, Sarah Mitchell, will be attending the 2008 General Conference of
The United Methodist Church in April as a reserve delegate.
We have given her $50.00 to help her with her expenses.
Our plans for the summer
mission trip to Beaufort, South Carolina did not work out and we had to cancel the trip. We hope to do some things locally for missions and
will try next summer for another mission trip.
We thank the members of the
First Church Family for your constant support and prayers.
And to God be all the glory and praise for what God is doing in our midst by the
love of the risen Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
