First United Methodist Church
Spiritual Growth
| Spiritual
growth at First Church is geared to all age levels. From
the Toddlers' Class to the senior adult classes and
everywhere in between, the goal of the church is to
provide appropriate lessons and discussion material in a
full-fledged Sunday School that will enable our members
to grow in their spiritual life. In all divisions of the
educational program, we have excellent teachers who are
interested in the spiritual growth of our members. In
addition to the Sunday School experience, Bible study
groups, Disciples' Classes and special learning sessions
are scheduled. Children's Division - The Children's Division provides a graded, age specific curriculum that insures that our children receive teaching that is grounded in faith and the tradition of The United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church. There is a strong cadre of volunteer teachers that have the interest of our children at heart. Coupled with a strong Sunday School program are several special learning experiences. All our third graders receive Bibles. There is an active Confirmation Class each year led by one of our ministers that prepare our twelve year olds for church membership. Youth Division - The Youth Division incorporates programs for our Junior High and Senior High young people. There is a continuation of the Sunday School classes from the Children's Division but with a greater depth of theology and Christian heritage. There are Sunday evening programs for both of these groups, as well as fun and fellowship activities such as skiing, beach trips, retreats and summer camps. The fun and fellowship is maintained in an atmosphere of caring and using the experiences to grow in society and in the spiritual maturing process. Young Adults - The Young Adult Division is one that sort of defies definition. Our oldest "young adult" class was started in 1946 by church members returning from World War II. These folks were ready to start families and get back to the fundamentals that may have been dimmed during the war years. This class is still in existence, and the members still consider themselves young adults. Our "real" young adults have several choices of classes. Some use the International lesson series while others may choose a curriculum that addresses current events or problems facing them. We have a very active and faithful group of young adults. Adults - The Adults at First Church have a wide range of educational opportunities. There are Sunday School classes to suit all age levels and level of structure desired by attendees. The adult classes are made up of both men and women. We have made the transition from all male classes and all female classes. The desire for husbands and wives to attend the same Sunday School class motivated this shift. Single men and women are welcome in the classes and feel right at home. Some of the classes hold social events so that there can be additional fellowship among the members at times other than Sunday morning. Sunday School is held from 9:45 until 10:40. This gives attendees ample opportunity to attend either the 8:45 worship service or the 10:55 service. |
