As human beings created
by God, and people of faith, we never stop growing.
Learning is a part of growing. Thus we never stop
learning. At Campbell United Methodist Church, we believe
that learning is a life-long process and we try to provide
opportunities for learning for all ages.
Education for children at Campbell United Methodist Church concentrates on telling the story of our faith. As they grow into the teen years, our youth begin to learn how to apply the story to their lives. Adults continue the process of applying the story to life experiences and living the story in the community and the world.
On Sunday mornings we have Sunday school classes beginning at age 3, all the way up to our most mature adults. Weekday opportunities include a children's music program, Disciple Bible Study groups, periodic short-term classes on a variety of topics, and liturgical seasonal studies. Many of our United Methodist Women circles also participate in studies – using the Bible, books, and movies. Occasionally we host or sponsor one day workshops and seminars.
Sunday
School – Our Sunday school program uses a
variety of methods and curriculum resources to meet the
learning needs of the different age levels:
In the three and four year old class, we use a method and
curriculum based on Montessori principles called Godly
Play. The story is presented with sensory
materials and then the children respond to the story in
one of many ways. They may choose to use art materials
to show how the story makes them feel. They may choose
to work with the sensory materials to repeat the story.
They may choose to look at a book or do a puzzle
to reinforce the story.
- Children in the elementary grades use the official United Methodist curriculum, the Exploring Faith series. This Biblically based material covers the whole Bible in a three-year cycle. Lessons include story, crafts, music, and worship.
- Classes for youth concentrate more on applying the story to life. Using a combination of discussion, art projects, and Bible study, the youth learn how scripture and the teachings of the church can help them make decisions in their everyday life.
- Currently we have one adult class on Sunday mornings – our Chapel class. This class uses video presentations and discussion to focus on the spirituality of their lives in the fast paced life in Silicon Valley.
Disciple
Bible Study – Disciple is a study of the
Bible based on the small group model of ministry.
Over the course of the thirty-four week study, during which
we cover about 80% of the Bible, the group becomes a community
that prays, eats, worships, and studies together.
In rotation we also offer Disciple II, III, and IV groups
that study smaller portions of the Bible with more depth.
Confirmation
– Every year, we prepare our 7 th graders for membership
in the church. Using the United Methodist confirmation
curriculum as a base, we have created a program that includes
study, going out into the community in service, attending
worship services of different faiths and denominations,
and retreats, including one with the Bishop.
