REFLECTING
The First United Methodist Church, Borger, Texas, has the distinction of being the first organized church in the City of Borger. By the first Sunday in July 1926, a house of worship was erected and Rev. Orion W. Carter appointed as pastor. The building was a simple structure, 36 by 60 feet in size, with no windows, no doors and no ceiling. The following week roofing, windows and barn doors with padlocks to keep out prowlers were added. When Annual Conference was held in November 1926, the church reported a membership of 57 with Sunday School enrollment of 250.
The building on the corner of West Second and North Hedgecoke Streets was constructed in 1930 and was remodeled and enlarged in 1948. The City of Borger was growing and the church was hardpressed to keep up the pace. Growth and development seemed to call for a new beginning. A new sanctuary was constructed at West Second and North McGee Streets in 1952. The present sanctuary has a seating capacity of 625 and was built at a cost of $85,000. An educational unit was added in 1960 at a cost of $268,000. That addition furnished 27,000 square feet of floor space for classrooms and offices plus a Garden Room which provides a place of beauty and convenience for group meetings, fellowship dinners, wedding receptions and a variety of informal meetings.
In the years of it's existence, the First United Methodist Church of Borger has provided a place of worship and spiritual growth for a multitude of people under the dedicated leader of 25 pastors. They are:
