From the Building Committee

BUILDING COMMITTEE UPDATE
Scheibel was the lowest bid at $1.7M. This figure is still too high for us. The Building Committee has begun to negotiate the price with Scheibel. Please begin cleaning up the rooms in the education wing and music room. Construction begins sometime in June.

F.A.Q.s
What are we building? We are renovating (and slightly expanding) the education wing, music room, fellowship hall, kitchen and bathrooms.
Why are we doing this? Because the building is aging and there haven't been any major renovations to our church since these area were built over 50 years ago.
What will be renovated first? Outside work, then inside the education wing, and then finally the fellowship hall and kitchen space
How long will it take? Hopefully, less than one year
Will we be able to use the rest rooms? Rest rooms will be accessible for some time. Eventually, they will temporarily and briefly need to be shut down. During that time, drink less coffee. Just kidding; portable units will be available.
Will worship be disrupted? No, the sanctuary is not being renovated at this time.
Can I have my wedding at Friendship? Yes, of course. You may want to go with a construction theme.
When is groundbreaking? May 19th, Pentecost Sunday! Thanks be to God!

From the Communications Committee:
To make it easier to tell everyone about our church, your Communications Team is finalizing a new, comprehensive Children & Youth Brochure detailing all church programs and opportunities for persons through age 18. An effort is also underway to identify and implement ways to minister to and include the post-high school young adult age group in church life.

Thanks to many church members and leaders, efforts continue to improve the content and usefulness of our church website, www.friendshipmethodistchurch.org, and our popular facebook fan page. With more than 140 "fans", including many nonmember friends, our facebook page is a beacon that provides news, comments, opportunities for sharing, and almost daily Bible inspiration.

Your Communications Team continues to spread the word, both internally to members and friends and externally to the greater community, by means of the road sign at the corner of the parking lot; by helping with PR for church worship, music, educational, and social events; and by keeping current such helpful resources as the church brochure, photo directory, bulletin boards, database, and Friendship Information Brochure.

From the Cemetery Committee:
The committee supervises all maintenance of the cemetery, including care of the grass, shrubs, and trees.

We are working to improve the records of burial plots so they can be updated on a continuous basis and possibly computerized.

We also help with the planning of the annual cemetery dinner in November.

From the Staff Parish Relations Committee:
Nursery Care is now available during both the 8:30 am and the 11:00 am Worship Services. It is staffed by two women of the church and is available for infants to age 5.

Christmas In April 2012
On April, 28, 2012, 34 volunteers from our church participated in the Christmas in April program. The project house was located in Port Republic, Maryland. The homeowner is 79 years old and she has a 54 year old son, who is in a wheel chair. They have 1 bathroom with a 24 inch door, so the wheel chair could not be pushed into the bathroom. They have to leave the wheel chair in the hall and carry the son into the bathroom. We installed a new 36 inch door and replaced the tub with a shower stall, so now, they can the wheel chair into the bathroom. We also replaced a section of the roof, added a 40' piece of guttering, added gutter guards, painted the window trim, caulked the windows, clean siding and fascia, installed lattice under the deck and painted it, planted flowers, trimmed bushes, and scraped and painted the oil tank. We would like to thank Joyce Terry for coordinating lunch for the volunteers and Ken Reynolds for putting together the material list for the project. Thank you to the 34 volunteers that worked on the house and the 18 volunteers that helped prepare the luncheon. The homeowner really appreciated the work and was amazed by all of the help.
