Love In Action

The story is told of a man who was trying to read a book, but whose young son kept interrupting him. The little boy would lean against his father's knee and say, "Daddy, I love you." Without looking up, the father would give him a pat on his head and say rather absentmindedly, "Yes, son, I love you too.'1 He would then give him a little nudge trying the get the boy to leave him alone so he could continue on with his reading. Finally, not being able to control himself any longer, the little boy ran up to his father, jumped up on his lap, threw his arms around his dad giving him a big hug as he exclaimed, "I love you, Daddy and I've just got to do something about it!

Two thousand years ago, God found himself in the very same position as that little boy. Our Creator looked at us and, filled with love and compassion for our sinful state, he too just had to do something about it. John tells us just what it is that God did about his great love for us in his gospel, chapter 3, verse 16.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." (NRSV)

John begins by assuring us of God's great love for us with words of the greatest love ever -"God so loved the world." He then continues on by telling of the greatest act of love ever -"That he gave his only Son. " Finally John tells us of God's invitation to us to be loved by the greatest gift of love ever given, God's Son Jesus Christ -

"So that everyone who believes in Him should not perish but may have eternal life. " (NRSV)

May each one of us reach out and embrace the love God offers to us through his Son, Jesus Christ. And then may we each put that love into action with all we meet.
