Mystery Brunch
Change of Plans!
July 20th

Mystery Brunch will be the second Sunday in July, after the service.  The destination is a mystery to all, a nice ride and lunch.  Please sign up on the fellowship sheets or give Doreen Allen a call at 662-7493.  You will have an enjoyable afternoon with friends.

Dana-Farber Cancer and Jimmy Fundraiser

I will be running a road race as a member of the team representing the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where I have been working full time since last September while finishing my Masters degree. Each member of the team fundraises for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and cancer care at the Institute.

On August 10, I will be running in the Falmouth Road Race- a 7 mile race along the beach and through the town of Falmouth, Cape Cod. The race draws thousands of runners and spectators each year, with 2008 being the 36th annual race. The course is apparently tough, and at 7 miles it will be the longest road race I've done, but I'm excited for the challenge and to be one of roughly 39 people wearing singlets for Dana-Farber.

If anyone would like to donate towards my fundraising for the race, donations can be made directly online by going to http://www.jimmyfund.kintera.org/falmouth/erinhauck . All of the money will go towards Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, and their efforts to reach "the ultimate finish line - a world without cancer." Donations can also be made by check, made out to "Dana-Farber Cancer Institute," and given to one of my parents who will get the donations out to me.

Thanks so much for your support- I'll let you know how the race goes!

Thanks, Erin Hauck

Remember Your Pledge

The summer season is approaching and with vacations, gardens, family visits – pledges are often forgotten.  Please take a moment to think about your pledge and remember to send it in if you are going to be away.  Our church doesn’t get a vacation from expenses and with your help our budget can be balanced each month.

A Gentle Reminder

In the last newsletter Jeff Haines wrote an article called “The Knock at the Door”.  It was about the installation of new doors in the Narthex and the many wonderful comments.  Jeff proposed raising funds for new double doors at the front of the sanctuary, a double set to Homer Hall and the door near the back of the sanctuary.  This is a mission for Jeff along with being part of a missionary trip to Haiti to help the Christian Schools.

Jeff proposed that the church “Hires” his company to install the remaining doors.  The proposed donations will pay for materials and labor.  After materials are paid for, all remaining funds would be used to pay for his mission trip to Haiti.  The cost of the door project is $2,850.00.

If you would like to donate to “The Knock at the Door” project please have your check in to the office as soon as possible.  You can designate to either “Doors” or “Mission Trip” on your check.  We are on the way to making this possible.

Fellowship Time

It is always nice to talk with your church family after church as you enjoy the tea and lemonade.  We have lots of good comments about the cookies and other treats served but we need your help in keeping this going.  This is just a friendly reminder to sign-up to host a Sunday (chart is posted in the Narthex).  If you cannot stay after the service, please call Kathy O’Connor, 637-3920, and she will help out.  If you can only provide the cookies please give Kathy a call.  Your response has been good and we hope you all will continue to through the summer.

FM-JD Meals on Wheels

In a letter sent to all the local congregations, the FM-JD Meals on Wheels describes a very pressing financial need.   Funding from congregations has declined over the past three years, and fund raisers and other efforts have not produced enough funds to deal with the crisis.   The letter requested a gift of $1000 from each church.  At the February 5th F-M Clergy meeting,  most churches indicated that their budgets for 2008 are already in place,  but offered to share this information through their newsletters, and with their Outreach and Mission Committees.  In 2007 the church gave $750.00 from Outreach’s and UMW budgets towards the FM-JD Meals on Wheels and the same amount to ESM Meals on Wheels.

The financial need is so critical for FM-JD Meals on Wheels that the future of this important ministry is in question in our community.  Perhaps this is a giving opportunity that will be of special interest to those who receive this newsletter.   If so, please send your contribution to:   FM-JD Meals on Wheels, Inc., PO Box 72 , Manlius , NY 13104

Altar Flowers

Please sign up for altar flowers.  The cost is $20.00.  You can take them home after the 10:30 service or pick them up the next day.  The flower chart is on the bulletin board by the church entrance in the Narthex.  More than one person can sign up on the same Sunday.

Threads of Love

This group of ladies continue to make clothing and blankets for the preemies.  There are many who sew, knit, and crochet at home and others who meet Thursday for the fellowship and support while they sew, etc.  Your continued support of this group is appreciated.  This year the group will meet only two Thursdays of the month, first and second Thursday of each month.  The Wednesday night group will meet in the homes and phone calls will be made for those meetings.

Gracie’s Gift

A group gathers here at the church to make fleece blankets for the children at Hillside Children’s Center.  These children are infancy through eighteen and sometimes their only desire is to have something they can call their own.   We have received donations from church members and would like to thank each of you who have donated.  We hope to continue this ministry.  So far about fifty-five blankets have been distributed to the Children’s Center.

What you can do to Help Refugees

Maybe you want to help, but you are not sure you can do it.   You are worried it will take too much time, or will be too difficult.  There are many ways to help and contribute, no matter what your time commitment, interest or ability.  An individual or a family can “sponsor” a family by providing a minimum of the following:

Meet the family at the airport

Cook their first meal.

Help as you can with furnishings.

Keep in weekly contact with the case manager.

Meet family for fellowship at least once a week for three months, and twice a week for the next three months.

Have a “closing” with the family at the end of six months.

If possible provide:  One month’s rent.   Security deposit.  Food for the first month.

Other possible ways to be involved:

Invite a refugee to do a presentation at a church.

Work to get the warehouse organized.

Volunteer to drive once or twice a week.

Donate gently used furniture and household items.

Make a monetary donation.

Mind the phone at the office

Surely, God is calling us to help in whatever ways we can…..from taking a family shopping,  to tutoring a refugee in English once a week, to providing school supplies, or holiday gifts.

F.I.S.H.  (Friends in Service Here)

For some people transportation is not readily accessible, and this becomes a common problem for people who do not drive anymore and need to get to their medical appointments.  This is where F.I.S.H. comes in handy.  F.I.S.H. was originally founded in England , and there are now chapters of F.I.S.H. all over the world.  The Fayetteville-Manlius-Minoa chapter of F.I.S.H. has been operating for over 35 years and transports people from the Fayetteville , Manlius, or Minoa areas to and from doctors’ appointments.  Our clients do need to be ambulatory.

F.I.S.H. is made up of all volunteers who give their time to dispatch, drive, or serve on various F.I.S.H. committees.  F.I.S.H. is a wonderful non-profit organization that helps members of our own community, and we need your help.  We need scheduled drivers (one day a month) or random drivers (on an as-needed basis).  If you prefer not to drive, we are in need of dispatchers, too.  Dispatchers take the calls from clients one week a month and try to find drivers to transport them.

If you would like to reach out and help members of our community get to their medical appointments, please give F.I.S.H. a call at 637-8158.  You will meet wonderful people and feel like you are helping out someone in need.

F-M Community Food Pantry

The Pantry, which is supported by our local Churches, serves families from the villages of Fayetteville and Manlius.  We provide food for approximately 100 households per month.

Volunteers are always needed.  Are you interested?  Each team of two works a 2-hour shift.  A volunteer rarely works more than once a month and normally only once every other month.  Training is provided.  If you are unable to work a regular schedule perhaps you could help out as a substitute.

The Pantry is opened on:

Tuesday                        10:00 to 2:00 (two shifts; 10 – 12 and 12 – 2)
Wednesday                   10:00 to 2:00 (two shifts; 10 – 12 and 12 – 2)
Wednesday Evening      5:00 to 7:00

If you would like to know more about this reach ministry please call Sr. Monica at 682-5184 or Sue Landas at 682-8420.  We’d love to have you be a part of the wonderful ministry of care and concern to our dear neighbors.
