Quadrennial Celebration of the Crossroads District
May 18th

On Sunday May 18th we are going to celebrate the Quadrennial Celebration of our District.  We have been a district now for almost four years and we are going to use this day to celebrate our fledgling Mission and Ministry.

We will begin with Worship at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church .  Our District Superintendent David Underwood will be preaching and all in the district are invited.

At 1:00 p.m. we will have our District Conference in the Calvary Church Sanctuary.

The District Council on Ministries invites you to come and share your ideas about mission and ministry that are at work in your church and can be shared with another church.    And at 2:00 p.m. we invite you and your church to come and share those things working in your church. There will be display space for this It Worked for Us Time.

A reception will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  for the Laity Award Celebration.  Rather than a banquet there will be a Decadent Dessert contest.  There is a District Superintendent Award for the most Decadent Dessert.

And at 3:30 p.m. we will gather in the Sanctuary to hand out the Laity Awards, celebrate Lay Speaking and whatever else presents itself between now and then.

Laity Award Winner 2008

We are pleased to announce that Jane Aliberto has been selected by you the congregation of the Fayetteville UMC to be the 2008 Laity Award winner.  Jane’s impressive outreach ministries made her clearly the Laity award-winner for this year.

The theme this year is based on Micah 6:8.

“…and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Jane Aliberto has a long history of activism in outreach through the Fayetteville UMC.  For years, she has helped a poor family by providing them with food.  She has been involved in ministries to the homeless.  Jane serves on the Outreach Committee, and for many years helped run a program for children, involving them in mission and outreach programs in the community and beyond, such as sending goodies to the troops or to college students.   Jane is also likely to be found helping the elderly with many of their needs.  She truly exemplifies one "who walks humbly and does justice."

On the National Scene:  From the Council of Bishops

On Friday, November 9th, the Bishops of The United Methodist Church called for the United States and its coalition partners to begin an immediate withdrawal of all troops from Iraq .

In calling for the immediate withdrawal, the bishops said their position is based on the denomination’s position that "war is incompatible with the teachings and examples of Christ," and Jesus Christ’s call for "his followers to be peacemakers."

Further the Council of Bishops calls United Methodist people throughout the world:

To pray for peace and to have regular prayer vigils for congregations and communities;
To care for all impacted by the war, including combatants and noncombatants by honoring the dead, healing the wounded and calling for the end of the war;
To be peacemakers by word and deed that we may be called the children of God.
