Theater BoxA few members of the United Methodist Church of Floral Park founded theatre Box in 1980, as a means of offering fellowship and entertainment for both the parishioners and the community. Since that time it has grown to become a True Community Theatre group with members coming from as far away as Brooklyn and Babylon. |

The Theatre Box has produced a wide array of shows including musicals like Fiddler on the Roof, Grease, South Pacific, and Anything Goes To Dramas, “Twelve” Angry Men and Steel Magnolias. Theatre Box has also did some fine comedy’s such as Rumors, The Odd Couple, and Don’t Drink the Water. If you would like to see more click on www.theatrebox.com. DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSEThis course is offered once a month on a Saturday, beginning at 12:30 P.M. The Instructor is Maria O'Callahn from Allstate Insurance, 139 Tulip Avenue, Floral Park. KOSTEL'S SAT AND CO-OP COURSEAndrew Kostel conducts an S.A.T. Preparation Courses and a Co-Op Preparation Course at the United Methodist Church. These Review Courses run for 9 weeks at a time and are held at various time of the year. The courses are designed to increase the students academic scores. FLORAL APARTMENT OWNERS CORP. BOARD MEETINGSThe Board of Directors of the Floral Apartment holds their monthly meetings at the United Methodist Church. BOY SCOUTSThere are various groups of Troop 4 Boy Scouts that holds weekly meetings at the United Methodist Church - Webelos Den and Bear Den for Cub Pack 4, Boy Scout Troop 4 and Crew 4. Pack Night is also conducted as well as their Pine Wood Derby and Blue MUSICAL THEME WORKSHOPThis is a musical workshop that runs for one week during the summer, dates and times are published well in advance. Lisa Kelly a music teacher and director conducts the Program. The workshop provides students a different musical theme daily. WEDNESDAY MOTHERS' CLUBThe purposes of the Wednesday Mothers' Club are: To Provide an opportunity for mothers of young children to establish lasting friendships; To welcome new residents into a caring fellowship and acquaint them with the resources of the community; To provide an opportunity for mothers of young children to grow in their understanding of themselves, their families, and the community; To Provide opportunities for creative services to the Church and community. Any mother with a pre-first grade child is eligible for membership in The Wednesday Mothers' Club. Meetings are held once a week, on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30. There are approximately seventy five (75) members and over one hundred (100) children, rangingin age from infant through five (5) years. We have seven classrooms, accommodating each age group. Older children enjoy gym time, snack time and arts and crafts. While approximately twenty (20) members serve as permanent sitters, the remaining members participate in an informative morning program. Sitters receive a 1/2 hour break each Wednesday, and one Wednesday morning off per month. One full year of service is required for every four years of membership in the club - service is defined as either serving as a permanent sitter of serving on the sixteen (16) member Board of Directors. The Wednesday Mothers' Club takes pridein out intersing and varied membership and their dedication to each other and the community. The club consists of some amazing women who continue to amass an extensive knowledge about the wonderful, and sometimes frustrating, world of raising small children - and then use that knowledge to support and advise each other. New members are accepted in September and February. Acceptance into the club is based on both the date the application is received and the availability of classroom space for each applicant's child(ren). Annual dues are $100.00. MY FIRST SCHOOLMy First School, A Cooperative Experience, was established in 1963 by parents in the Floral Park United Methodist Church who saw the need for early childhood education programs. This nondenominational, not-for-profit school introduce children to their first school experience in a warm and nurturing environment. The curriculum stresses social and emotional development through guided play, arts and crafts, stories, music and movement. Children are encouraged to share, take turns, listen and use language to develop a classroom community in which each child has the opportunity to speak, grow and learn. My First School offers the following classes and sessions: Two Times! (Ages 2-3) Nursery School! (Ages 3-4) Pre-Kindergarten (Ages 4-5) Kinderfun (Ages 5-6) THE FLORAL PARK YOUTH COUNCIL
The Floral Park Youth Council is an organization of youth involvement, staffed completely by volunteers. Established in 1990 it has served as an alternative experience for children other than organized sports. Structurally the Council functions by committee, and each committee lead by a director. Each Director
is asked to chair one event a year which equates to 1.5 events per month. The events are dances with DJ's,
trips to different destinations of interest to the children. Ski trips during the winter. Breakfast with
Santa, Easter Egg Hunt, American Girl Doll Tea, Vintage Clothes fashion show and other activities of this
nature.
The Youth Council Center we run an evening recreation program broken down by age groups. Friday evening
from 6:30 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. for grades nine (9) and up. They come and play basketball, play pool, video games,
computer lab or just "Hang Out". On Saturday evening the center opens at 4:00 P.M. for session one for children
in grades one thru three. Session two begins at 6:00 P.M. for grades four thru six and session three starts at
8:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. for teen grades seven and up.
The Youth Council has 487 families as members and serve approximately 1000 children over the course of the year. The Council services the Floral Park Bellerose Community as well as some families who live in neighboring communities. |
