“Experiencing God”

In the 2007 Charge Conferences we asked and encouraged individuals to share their “God Moments.” A lawyer in one of the churches talked about how she experiences God in the court room during trials.  A Trustee of a church shared his vivid experience of God when he was going for surgery for cancer.  A lady from another church talked about her recovery from breast cancer.  The list goes on.

At the Jurisdictional Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan, July 15-18, 2008, one of our bishops mentioned how he is encouraging people to talk about how they have experienced God or how they are experiencing God.  The idea is taking off like a wildfire.

I attended a service in one of our churches on August 3, 2008.  The youth group was in charge of the services of worship, during which a number of young people talked about how they experienced God in their mission trip.  What a marvelous and touching worship it was!

I have just read an article from one of our churches entitled “A God Thing.” The writer pointed out that whenever something happens and the hand of God is so visible that you can’t help but notice, we call that a “God Thing.”  Of course we hear about “God Moments” or the experiences of God.  We need to realize that God is always reaching to human beings through books, nature, events, worship, scriptures, conversations, individuals, media, etc. & etc. The only question is: “Are we listening?”  When was the last time we vividly encountered God?  Indeed God is in every moment, but do we notice Him? I frequently ask and look for signs from God

and I do experience them.

What do we do with our “God Things” or God Moments?  Handle them with care and share them at every appropriate opportunity.  Some people may cheapen those invaluable experiences as coincidences.  Our role is not to persuade anyone, but simply share your “God Thing” because it is true.  Many times in scriptures when people experienced miracles by Jesus he asked them to go away and share what they had experienced.

There is a great need for us Christians to share our faith.  I believe it is one way we can win souls for Christ and gain new members in our churches.  We are the best source of inviting people to Christ.  We ask everyone’s help in getting the “God Things” to other people so that they too may continue to become more attentive to the “God Things” of life.  Amen.

LIBERIA HAITI COVENANT COMMITTEE UPDATE

July 2008, Billie Rench

Summer is here for us to enjoy, but don’t forget our covenant countries Liberia and Haiti!

Rev. Dr. James Karblee and Rev. Dr. Anthony Dioh:  The Flint District covenant committee met to evaluate and celebrate our partnership with these countries.  It was a delight to hear the churches response after hosting Dr. Karblee or Dr. Dioh with these comments: “I was surprised to learn of the living conditions of families, the salaries of pastors; it was so good to hear these things from a Liberian.” Another said, “The difference in the currency in Liberia and US was shocking, $1 US is $50 Liberian.”  A pastor said, “We will absolutely pray for continued peace for Liberia and its people”.  A home host said, “We were helped to gauge the depth of need and reevaluate our perspective on our own lives and struggles.  It was a privilege to have personal conversations and to hear him express gratitude for the way we try to make a difference.”  No negative thoughts were expressed only positive words like humble, grateful, powerful and appreciative.

Liberian Pastor’s Salary Support, Advance #14367A:  All offerings from the events in Flint District Churches hosted went to the Advance for helping United Methodist Pastors in Liberia.  Some of their salaries are about $5.00 a month.  Your offerings from the nine days they were with us were $2,747.49.  Thank you for making a difference in their lives.  Remember the resolution was passed in 2002 for pastors and congregations to support this huge need.

Letters from partner District Superintendents Rev. Henry and Rev. Korpellah: Both superintendents expressed what the Flint District relationship meant to them.  They expressed thanks for the scholarships for elementary children to be able to go to school.  Gratitude for the solar radios received for pastors.  Both districts encouraged VIM teams to come to their district to assist in several projects.

A theme in both letters was the need for transportation.  They remembered the great gifts taken in March 2005, two motor bikes.  They used them and really appreciated the ability to get to their churches throughout the district, but on Liberian roads after three and a half years, they are worn out.  Do we want to try to provide a new “Jungle Bike” for each district?  It is something to think about.  If every church in the district could give $100.00 it would be an answer to their prayers.

2008 Detroit Annual Conference offering:  Detroit Conference Treasurer, Anna Morford reports the following gifts to:

Bishop Judith Craig Home Monrovia, Advance # 11820A, $29,935.87.  This wonderful village is now providing a home, food, spiritual guidance, and education for 200 orphans following the long civil war.

Haiti School Hot Lunch Program, Advance $418002, $47,978.46.  This is a wonderful response to the cries of children reported to be eating clay to fill their empty bellies. What a blessing to so many children!

AFRICA UNIVERSITY – TASK FORCE ANNOUNCED”

Dr. David Fleming –Secretary, Flint District Global Board of Missions

Flint District has been asked by our Bishop Dr. Jonathan Keaton and our Superintendent Dr. Andrew Allie to consider a financial mission to support Africa University in Zimbabwe.  Africa University is located at the Methodist Mission of Old Mutare and is the first fully accredited United Methodist – Related Institution on the African continent.  Approval has been given for support of this institution by the General Conference.  Our superintendent, Dr. Andrew Allie has asked me to announce a Flint District task force to support this mission

Africa University, Wow! How exciting a project and one that is unique in that it is entirely for Africans.  A plea was made by the Bishops of Africa to develop a full fledged University to stop the loss of Africa’s most talented minds to the outside world.  When talented students study overseas for their education they seldom return to their native land.  Consequently, the mission of Africa University is to shine throughout the continent graduating students to lead the countries like Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Angola, becoming national leaders in medicine, education, the church, politics, and agriculture.  This unique mission is United Methodism in the forefront of cultural development of Christ passion for the people of the world.

Africa University began in 1992 out of a Methodist mission station and hospital by enrolling 40 students.  The land of 150 acres upon which the school is now built was given by the church to the university, but it remains a Methodist institution.  Currently enrollment is 1,300 students.  The university is striving to be entirely self sufficient as it grows its own food products on the adjacent farm and also houses and feeds its own staff.  The university purchases and imports needed products from the outside world such as gasoline.  This policy makes it entirely a self sufficient institution, not a burden on the church, community or government.

The newly established University site was developed by retired American engineer Dick Reeves who volunteered his considerable skills in long range construction.  Dick Reeves supervised the construction of the Woodie W. White Bridge over the Nyagambu River, which connects the University campus site with the Old Mutare Mission site.  He worked with architects and contractors in the construction of the nineteen buildings which now comprise the campus.  Volunteer In Mission teams are welcome to come and work on the continuing staff housing projects which are still currently going on.

This past month the Flint District Board of Missions hosted the meeting of F. Loyd Rollins the director of development of Africa University.  Mr. Rollins who came from the Nashville office of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the UMC presented his dream of financial independence for Africa University at a meeting at Lake Fenton UMC.  It is the dream of the Africa University Development Office to have financial independence for the university by the creation of a self sustaining endowment.

The United Methodist Churches of the Flint District are being asked for help with this financial support through the creation of the Africa University Task Force.  This will be part of a national UMC development to raise 80 million dollars for this school.

Won’t you be a part of this effort to change the world for Christ by helping build the seven degree granting programs, five on a Ph.D. level, employing 135 faculty and staff, in 31 new modern buildings.  We wish this school to run without debt and without burden upon the United Methodist Church of Africa.  This in our experience is Christ present mission to the world.    May God bless you in your holy work.   Africa University can be found on the internet at http://www.africau.edu/.
