The
history of Flag Springs United Methodist Church began
almost 160 years ago when a pioneer preacher of the
Methodist Protestant Church chose to stop in our
community and preach to a group of fox hunters.
This story has been handed down from generation to
generation. One thing all the stories agree upon
is that one man by the name of the Reverend Alson Gray
was the founder of Flag Springs Church. Reverend
Gray was at the time the President of the Conferences in
the mid 1800's. It is said that he was passing
through this area and met some fox hunters whom he
preached to and they were so inspired that they asked
him to come back one year from that date. The
meeting took place at the appointed time and a service
was held at a nearby log schoolhouse.
The year
1839 marks the beginning of an organized effort to
establish a church here. The services were first
held in a log schoolhouse but were later moved to a
frame church. The completion of the first building
was completed in 1898. A frame arbor was
used for the revival services. The church was given the
name Flag Springs. The name is said to have come
from the many flags (wild flowers) that grew beside a
nearby spring.
In 1947,
Flag Springs began to solicit funds for a new church.
The new structure was completed in 1954. As our
church continued to grow, additional educational
facilities were needed. Construction on these
classrooms and our Fellowship Hall were completed in
October 1965. Our sanctuary was completely
remodeled in 1976. The Flag Springs Christian Life
Center was completed in 2004. If you are in our area, feel free to
visit. Everyone is welcome!
