OUR HISTORIC MISSION

Our Christian and historical mission is 'The Primary Task' of the Church: Inviting people into fellowship with God and his people, leading people to an encounter with God in and through Jesus Christ, nurturing and making them disciples of Jesus Christ, and sending them out to witness to the saving power of God through mission and ministry.

We believe that God loves the city! As a witness to our faith in Jesus Christ, First United Methodist Church of Wilkes-Barre is committed to "staying in the city" as a servant church to work toward God's shalom (peace), and to offer ourselves in ministry with the least of God's people. We will proclaim God's salvation through word and deed, as we perform works of mercy and seek justice for all who are poor, blind, and oppressed. We will work toward reconciliation with and within the community by building coalitions with other churches, institutions, social agencies, and the business community, who are also working to bring healing and wholeness to all members of our community.
