At about 8:00 P.M., on May 9, 1998, smoldering flames erupted into a conflagration that soon engulfed the entire church. By 10:30 P.M., all that remained of the building was the walls. It is important to say building, because even as the structure was being consumed, members watching were voicing the sentiments that have carried Christ's message down through the ages: the building may be lost, but the church will remain through the faith of the people!
First United Methodist Church of Tavares is indeed alive and well! On Sunday, the day after the fire, services were held and that evening several committees were formed to begin the tasks related to planning and reconstruction. It was decided to bring two portable units on site, one to house office functions, the other to accommodate the needs of several church school classes. Both portables served nicely.
A Building Study Committee met regularly to plan for the future. With much hard work and prayers, a beautiful new building was built and now houses many important activities and ministries.. Your prayers are appreciated.
