History of FUMC’s Group

United Methodist Women (UMW) is the organization for women within the United Methodist Church.  It is a continuation that evolved from the Women’s Missionary Society of our former Evangelical Church. The Missionary Society became the Women’s Society of World Service when the Evangelical Church merged with the United Brethren Church in 1946.  After the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) merged with the Methodist Church in 1968, the women’s program became known as the United Methodist Women.  By 1972, UMW had organized around the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, and the general conference established the Commission on the Status and Role of Women.

                                                                

In the early years (1884 on) of the women’s missionary organizations, the focus was on sending missionaries and helping to change the lives of women and girls in foreign lands.  It was in 1918 that Maude Leyda Shambaugh, was sent to China to teach in the Nanking Girls School.  She remained in China until 1927 when missionaries were forced to leave the country by Communist political organizers and propagandists.

OF UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

 

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
