Our Mission

The mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is to prayerfully create shawls that will provide not only physical warmth, but also emotional and spiritual comfort.

~ Shawl Maker’s Prayer ~

God, bless the work of my hands,

may it bring joy to the wearer and peace to the crafter.   May the person who receives this shawl feel your loving embrace.

May this shawl be a tangible

prayer and blessing.

Amen.

Prayer shawls are knitted by church members and presented as a gift from our congregation to people who are experiencing bereavement, serious illness or other difficult circumstances.  Many prayers and blessings are knit into every shawl. When a person wraps themselves in their prayer shawl, they are reminded of the love our congregation and the gentle arms of Jesus which enfold, uplift and comfort us all.

The shawl Ministry at First Church is held on the 2nd Thursday eve of the month at 6:30-8:00pm and the 3rd Friday afternoon 1:00-2:30 PM.  There are about 12 ladies on Thurs evenings and approx. 8-9 on Fri. afternoons.

Sunday Jan 21,2007 we had our first dedication of 7 shawls that went to individuals.  Feb.4, 2007 we held a more detailed dedication.  Other shawls will be given to the Carlisle Regional Medical Cancer Center.  Through this Prayer Shawl Ministry our circle of girls are beginning to see and feel the gifts of God's love in a tangible way as we Knit and crochet with caring hands and loving hearts.

We sit in a circle which includes an Altar with a cross and 3 candles representing Father, Son,& Holy Spirit.  With relaxing music in the background we begin with prayer and continue on with our knitting and crocheting.  Lots of conversation, laughter, and instructions are shared as we sip hot coffee and tea and talk over ideas.

If you are a knitter or want to learn to knit, we need you.  A circle of 21 friends (men are welcome) meet to knit shawls.  Recipients may include Nursing homes, Cancer centers, Safe Harbor and Hospitals.  For more information call Lois Weibley at 243-4467.
